Alice - Birmingham tutor
Information About Alice:
Personal Description:
I began tutoring students to fund my PhD in English Literature, and I taught a range of syllabuses (OCR, AQA, CCEA, EDEXCEL) and levels (KS2, KS3, GCSE, A-Level and degree). In 2011, I became a Learning Mentor at a top grammar school in Birmingham - King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Girls - where I helped GCSE students with revision and study techniques, and supported those who had problems revising.
Fuelled by my love of tutoring, I trained to become a teacher, graduating from the King Edwards Consortium (which was rated `Outstanding` by Ofsted) in 2012. I completed my training at King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Girls, before taking up a teaching position at Oakham School in 2013. At Oakham, I have taught A-Level English Literature, IB, GCSE and KS3 classes.
Teaching Experience:
I have always loved studying English Literature and am passionate about my subject. Having gained a First Class degree at the University of Birmingham, I stayed on to complete a Masters and then a PhD, which I thoroughly enjoyed. While at university, I became qualified to teach undergraduates, and this sparked my love of teaching. I was accepted into the highly competitive and prestigious King Edward's Consortium teacher training programme, and qualified as 'outstanding'. I have been a fully qualified teacher for 7 years now, and genuinely love teaching all levels and qualifications, as I enjoy helping pupils to make progress. Tutoring is a special love of mine, because you can help a pupil make huge progress in a short amount of time, due to the beneficial nature of one-to-one teaching.
As well as reading widely, and being experienced in teaching across different exam boards, I am an experienced GCSE examiner, which means that I can offer key insights into the exam process.
I am passionate about all aspects of teaching English, but particularly enjoy helping students to develop the craft of writing in order to express their ideas and views more carefully and clearly. As an experienced GCSE examiner, I also know how to help students express their ideas in a way which will gain them valuable marks. Furthermore, I am fully trained to teach the IB, having attended numerous certified workshops.
Overall, I am an enthusiastic, caring, and motivational teacher: I inspire my students to achieve their potential, and I work hard to develop their self-confidence, which is key to success.
Tutoring Approach:
I like to give very organized and structured lessons, which is why I always plan our sessions. I feel very strongly that students need to have confidence in themselves, and so I work hard to identify their strong points and their weaknesses, and to address any issues that they have (such as with writing, grammar, textual analysis). I work incredibly closely with the syllabuses, and help the students to identify what they need to do in each exam, what the examiners are looking for, and how they can achieve the results that they want.
