Information About Kathy:

Personal Description:

I am a languages teacher specialising in English, EFL, Italian, Spanish, and French. I am passionate about languages and travelling and that is why I became an EFL teacher shortly after leaving school. I then went on to teach abroad (Spain and Italy), where I learnt to speak these languages fluently and also to experience the cultures of these countries. After my experiences abroad I came home to the UK to do my university studies (Spanish and Italian) and to develop my teaching career in EFL further by becoming involved in teaching English for Academic Purposes (EAP) at University level (UCL London, and Bath University). I am also now an EFL teacher trainer at UCL and at Bath University. Regarding my students, I think it is really important to motivate and encourage by helping people to enjoy their learning experience. I now live in Bristol and am looking for local tutoring work to supplement my univeristy work. I am also a mother and so working on a part-time basis is now a more flexible option for me.

Teaching Experience:

15 years EFL teaching experience in both private schools and at University level.
I have taught Spanish, Italian, and French at private language schools in the UK and provided private tuition in these languages.
I am an EAP (English for Academic Purposes) tutor helping adult learners with essay writing and proofreading.
I have over 5 years experience as a teacher trainer (CELTA and DELTA)

Tutoring Approach:

My starting point is to establish students' needs / goals and then to tailor materials and content to these needs. I choose topics which will interest and motivate my students. I also like to use film, television clips, and music where appropriate since this makes the language come alive. I am very encouraging and sensitive to issues connected to confidence and motivation and believe that it is very important to foster a positive learning atmosphere which will encourage learner independence. I am particularly interested in teaching online and using technology to support language learning

Qualifications:

• 10 GCSES: including English A grade and French A grade
• 3 A Levels including English Grade A; French Grade A
• 1 S Level (French)
• Double Honours in Italian and Spanish from University of Manchester (2:1)
