Victoria - Cambridge tutor
Information About Victoria:
Personal Description:
I am 27 and am currently completing a PhD in English Literature at the University of St Andrews. I have an exemplary academic record, having obtained an M.Litt in Women, Writing and Gender (with distinction) and a first class MA (hons) in English Literature. I gained a prize for receiving the highest first class degree in English from the University of St Andrews, in addition to the Samuel Rutherford Prize for the most distinguished work in English Literature for my undergraduate dissertation. My research interests include the literature and culture of the nineteenth century, in particular, in the works of the Bronte sisters and Elizabeth Gaskell; the presentation of gender and sexuality; and the relationship between women, food and the body. I am also working as a university scribe and proof reader, taking notes and editing essays for students with special needs.
Teaching Experience:
I have taught English to undergraduate students at the University of St Andrews with excellent results and have provided personal tuition for students with special needs. My teaching covers a wide range of Literature from Medieval to Restoration Theatre. I have taught English Module EN1003: Ghosts and Doubles, an Introduction to Nineteenth and Twentieth Century Literature at the University of St Andrews, which included novels, plays, poetry, and literary theory. I have a qualification in Teaching and Assessment from the University of St Andrews. In addition, I am currently tutoring A Level and GCSE English, concentrating upon critical essay writing and exam preparation.
Tutoring Approach:
My passion for English and friendly attitude motivates students, providing them with confidence in their own abilities. For university students, I encourage theoretical and critical approaches to literature which cultivates a deeper understanding of both the text, and the cultural discourse surrounding its composition. For students taking Standard Grades or Highers, I focus upon critical essay writing, close reading analysis, technique and language, as well as ensuring that the student engages with, and has a detailed comprehension of each text. Having gained 7A*s and 2As in my GCSEs, 3As at A level and first class MA and MLitt degrees, I am able to impart the skills and knowledge that I used to gain these top marks to my students. I teach both individuals and small groups, tailoring the lessons to suit the requirements of each student and their course of study.
