Rachel - Willesden tutor

Information About Rachel:

Personal Description:

My name is Rachel. I am an enthusiastic, experienced tutor from the Reading area, offering my services in a number of different subject areas - English Literature, English as a Foreign Language, Philosophy/Critical Thinking and Media Studies.

As an individual, I consider myself to be conscientious, organised, personable and passionate about teaching; I am not averse to a challenge, and enjoy learning new things and meeting new people. I am a non-smoker, who likes to be active, enjoys reading and writing, music/theatre and travelling.

In July 2009 I graduated from the University of Bristol with a 2:1 Honours degree in English Literature and Philosophy. I am extremely driven by the pursuit of knowledge, and have always enjoyed passing my own enthusiasm for learning on to others, both adults and children. As such, straight after finishing my degree, I moved to South Korea to teach English as a second language, which provided a great opportunity to travel and experience a completely new culture, as well as allowing for the development of my teaching skills. As a recent graduate with relevant work experience, I offer a fresh, while still knowledgeable and skilled, approach to tutoring.

Teaching Experience:

My teaching/tutoring experience is as follows:

- Reading/Writing mentor during secondary school and whilst at University (secondary aged children); lessons usually on a one-to-one basis,

- Teacher of English as a foreign language for the summer-long 'Enjoy English Programme' 2008, in the Basque Country, Spain. I taught lessons in English based around songs, sport, drama, arts/crafts and games, culminating in a show at the end of the programme (primary aged children).

- Full-time ESL Teacher in Suwon, South Korea. I taught 4 - 14 year old Korean children the English Language, particularly focusing on phonics, pronunciation, grammar, spelling and conversation skills. Class sizes ranged from 1- 11.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is simple - I aim to provide my students with the most enjoyable, yet efficient learning environment possible, with the obvious aim of improving the student's ability in their chosen subject area. Furthermore, I aim to build a rapport with each of my students, which means they enjoy learning, rather than seeing it as a chore. My lessons all have clear aims, which I achieve through solid lesson structure and effective teaching technique, yet are exciting and stimulating for both student and tutor.
