Claire - Kendal tutor
Information About Claire:
Personal Description:
I'm a young, hardworking and dedicated secondary school Science teacher. Since graduating from University in 2009, I have been working with young people in various contexts; coaching trampolining, working abroad as an ESL teacher, private tutoring, and upon completion of my PGCE, working as a teacher in a highly successful Lancaster comprehensive school. Energetic, approachable, and confident, I'm able to relate well to young people.
In my spare time I enjoy keeping fit and exploring the outdoors. I'm passionate about the environment and have been involved in various conservation and wildlife projects both locally and further afield. In my school holidays I enjoy travelling around the world and love meeting new people.
Teaching Experience:
Successful completion of PGCE in summer 2014 and immediate permanent employment at Ripley St Thomas Church of England Academy as a Science teacher. I have been teaching the new Science curriculum at KS3 (years 7 and 8), AQA dual Science GCSE in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, and the new 2016 curriculum to triple award Biology GCSE.
Private Maths tutoring for students completing GCSE's in 2010; all of whom showed excellent progress and went on to achieve their target grade.
1 year teaching English language to a range of ages (5 - adult) and abilities (beginner - intermediate) in Vietnam including one-to-one home tutoring.
Volunteer placements in Cambodia and the Philippines teaching underpriviledged children English and Marine Biology.
Tutoring Approach:
I feel it's important to make my lessons interesting, challenging and enjoyable for all students. Lessons should always be well structured, using tailored resources closely linked to the curriculum under study. I believe students should work hard and be active in their learning; during my years of study and teaching I have gathered a wide range of resources and activities that build in difficulty to make this possible.
I'm flexible in my approach to tutoring as I'm aware that the needs of different students will vary greatly and will change over the course of tuition. As a general guide, I will:
1) Identify key problem areas with students prior to their first session
2) Compile a short, concise list of learning objectives giving greater emphasis on addressing these areas
3) Work through objectives using the current curriculum tailored to the students' individual learning style
4) Summarise and check off learning objectives with the student, addressing misconceptions if and when they arise
5) Recommend any extra reading/work to enhance students understanding (also giving homework when this would be beneficial)
