Claire - Stroud tutor
Information About Claire:
Personal Description:
I have recently finished studying for a Postgraduate Diploma in Forensic Psychology and want to work, in the future, with people with learning difficulties who find themselves in the Criminal Justice System, for whatever reason.
I am passionate about language and literacy and believe that literacy skills are essential, not only for employability, but also for social inclusion in general.
I live in Cheltenham with my husband, my toddler Thomas and two cats. When I am not being a mum, I indulge in my other passions: genealogy and gluten-free cooking and blogging. I was an LEA Governor for a Bristol primary school for four years.
Teaching Experience:
I have eleven years experience of teaching curriculum English to learners from 11 to 18 years in a wide range of settings, in both the state and independent sectors. I have successfully taught students the skills to sit the National Tests at the end of Year 9, GCSE English Language and Literature, Certificate of Achievement and 'A' Level English Literature. I have a very good track record of raising the achievement of students from Ds to Cs and from Bs to As and A*s.
I have a particularly strong background in supporting learners who struggle with literacy and with the demands that the secondary English curriculum places upon them. I have most recently worked with students with a range of Additional Educational Needs, such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, Speech and Language Impairment and Autistic Spectrum Disorder.
Tutoring Approach:
My approach is fun, friendly, interactive and multi-sensory. I believe in fostering both learners' independence and self-esteem and so provide scaffolded tasks that the students can complete with a sense of achievement. Learning is tailored to the student's needs and learning experience. Tasks are short with specific learning goals and immediate feedback.
I am able to provide general study skills, such as reading comprehension, essay writing and exam skills and revision methods, as well as support for coursework and home assignments.
