Personal Description:

My English degree is from Oxford University. I have a strong interest in journalism and creative writing. An experienced public speaker, debater and presenter, I understand how language is used to persuade and motivate, and its literary uses.

I have 5 children, so I know how to help students to develop. Exam technique, and confidence in tests, is something I can help with.

My first career was in banking. Then I ran my own business (a children's play centre) and worked in business consultancy. More and more of my time is taken up with private teaching.

One to one teaching helps the student to become more confident, focused and successful in their studies. I challenge underperformance, and raise the student's own expectations. They enjoy our time, as well as learning how to make the most of their ability.

My students face their exams with a new enthusiasm and self-confidence, based on the work we do together.

Teaching Experience:

Immediately after graduating, I taught English as a foreign language at summer schools in Oxford, and I helped a Dutch graduate with medieval literature. I then worked as a private tutor in Hull.

I currently coach students from the age of 8, teach for the 11+ exams, and can provide you with excellent references from clients for that, GCSE and A-level students. All have improved their skills, confidence and results through bespoke coaching which addresses weaknesses constructively, thoroughly and fast. For the 11 plus, I teach the key skills of elimination and approximation and I address the important issue of children's anxiety.

Arising from my tuition I have written more than a dozen study guides which are highly rated and are available on Amazon UK.

Tutoring Approach:

Students' aims and abilities vary; but all of them should benefit very tangibly from a course of individual tuition, focused on helping them to attain their individual targets.

My students grow in confidence, once they can see what they are required to do, and know what to look for. Whole class teaching cannot enable every pupil to reach their potential, but I aim to challenge, lead and inspire my students to get as far as they can in the time we have.

I am absolutely committed to leaving every client feeling they have had real value from me, so that they too will recommend me. The effect of this is that I don't have to advertise.
