Stephanie - York tutor
Information About Stephanie:
Personal Description:
I am an enthusiastic, friendly, patient but firm former languages teacher who is now retraining to be a solicitor. I currently work part time at the College of Law, assisting postgraduate law students as they participate in pro bono schemes, and I am also studying my Legal Practice Course there.
I miss many aspects of the teaching world which is why I have chosen to continue to use my skills on a one-to-one basis.
In my spare time, I enjoy running, Urban Gym classes, training with the Territorial Army, baking and trying to teach myself Italian.
Teaching Experience:
I qualified as a Modern Languages teacher in July 2009. During my training, I worked in two very different secondary schools. I taught French across the 11-18 age range, alongside some Spanish.
I then taught French and German in Shropshire on a temporary basis before moving to a permanent job at a high achieving grammar school in Buckinghamshire in September 2010. I achieved an excellent set of results last year, both at GCSE and A/S Level. The decision to leave this position was a difficult one.
Prior to teacher training, I graduated in June 2008 from St Andrews University with an MA in French and Spanish (2.1). During my degree, I privately tutored a pupil for his IB Spanish exams and I also volunteered in a local secondary school, assisting the class teacher with small groups of pupils, as part of the University's Widening Access programme.
I have also spent a year abroad working for the British Council as a Foreign Language Teaching Assistant in French secondary schools. I taught English in tandem with the class teacher and I also led my own classes. I found additional work as a private tutor for sixth formers and adults and in the local agricultural college, teaching environment-specific vocabulary to adults. In addition, I tutored the local town-twinning committee in English in preparation for their exchange visit to England.
More recently, I have tutored two primary school pupils in French in order to give them a head start at secondary school.
I now teach on a supply basis for City of York Council, gaining experience in a wide variety of schools. across York. Since starting to privately tutor in 2011, I have taught GCSE pupils of varying abilities, A/S pupils, a retired man and a couple looking to move to France and someone who works in the wine trade who would benefit from a working knowledge of the language.
In short, I can adapt my teaching style to suit any age and ability.
Tutoring Approach:
I have been described by my PGCE tutors and my subsequent Heads of Department as 'firm, fair and fun' and I believe this is the best approach to teaching and learning. Of course, my style can be adapted to suit any learner's needs - I'm open to change. I am dedicated and will be willing to source / make additional materials as required if this would enhance the learning experience.
