Information About Miranda:

Personal Description:

I am 31 years old and recently finished a PhD in English. Besides tutoring, I teach English literature and academic writing at New York University in London and Goldsmiths. I also review for the Times Literary Supplement and am involved in my own research. I am passionate about literature, and enjoy the challenge of imparting this enthusiasm to my students. On the other hand, I am very aware of the difficulties that students of the subject can encounter, and am committed to finding the right way to overcome them.

Teaching Experience:

Over the last ten years, I have taught primary school, GCSE, A-level and University-level English literature and language. This has required an in-depth knowledge of a wide range of literary genres and periods. During the last four years I have also participated in a postgraduate training programme at University College London to explore innovative methods of teaching writing and study skills, and have gained extensive experience of designing and leading academic writing workshops for undergraduates.
I currently teach a course entitled 'Literary London: 1666 to the Present Day' at Goldsmiths, and an academic writing class at New York University in London. I recently co-organised an academic development project to create an online writing resource for undergraduate students at UCL.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in adapting my teaching methods to suit the individual requirements and objectives of each student. In all cases, however, I aim to give students the linguistic and analytical tools that will enable them to approach the subject with confidence and enthusiasm, and to succeed in exams.

Qualifications:

• PhD in English, 'Shops and Shopping in Henry James', University College London
• MA in English, Nineteenth-Century Studies , King's College London (Distinction)
• BA (Hons) English Literature, York University (1st with distinction).
