Information About Annika:

Personal Description:

Currently I am a student at the University of Sussex, Brighton. I am in my second year of my degree in International Relations and Contemporary European Studies. I am originally from Germany where I finished school and then decided to move to England. I speak both English and German fluently and additionally, as I have learned English in school, have the advantage of understanding the processes involved in learning a foreign language.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored students in Germany for about 6 years in English and Maths. One of my students that I tutored consistently finished in the top of his class. In addition, I have worked with children aged 9 to 14 during holidays. Since the beginning of this academic year (08/09) I have been working as a Student Mentor for Sussex University. In this capacity I have helped students with difficulties. This includes the preparation of presentations and essay plans as well as reading through and editing essays. In addition, I've completed the Cambridge Certificate to teach English as a foreign language.

Tutoring Approach:

I take a rather laid-back approach as I do not believe in too much pressure. I try to establish a friendly relationship with my tutees so that they have the confidence to ask questions and are not afraid to ask questions. I believe that the easiest method to improve one's grades through tutoring is doing your homework with your tutor. This helps students keep up with school work and gives the tutor the ability to see where the student's weaknesses lie. Then, in addition to the homework, the tutor and the tutee can work more specifically on these weaknesses. Especially for tutoring in languages, I see from my own experience that speaking it with native speakers is crucial. Much of my tutoring for German would thus involve conversational parts.
