Information About Lorna:

Personal Description:

I currently work as a scientist in a large bio-medical company. I have previously worked in academic environment, where I tutored undergraduate science students at Durham University. I am friendly and bring enthusiasm to my classes. I decided to become a private tutor as I enjoyed teaching in my previous posts and want to give something back to up and coming young scientists. I believe anyone can pass science exams if they are taught in the right way. I am a published scientist in cell biochemistry and have lectured over the world on areas of cell and micro biology. Teaching Experience:

I have been an experienced Tutor at Durham University in the faculty of Biological and Biomedical sciences. I have also experience of Tutoring A level chemistry and Biology and have been able to raise my students average grade from C to A. I currently mentor the young scientists in my workplace. Additionally, I am a Science, engineering and mathematics Ambassador (STEM), which aims to Ensuring that all young people, regardless of background, are encouraged to understand the excitement and importance of science, technology, engineering and mathematics in their lives, and the career opportunities to which the STEM subjects can lead. In this role I help all schools and colleges across the UK understand the range of STEM Enhancement & Enrichment opportunities available to them and the benefits these can bring to everyone involved.

Tutoring Approach:

Relating problems to real life examples, as I have academic and industrial perspectives I can do this extremely well. I enjoy teaching people who want to learn, but need to find ways of structuring this, which I can help with. I can break difficult concepts down into easy memorable pieces. I am a believer in responsive teaching with the student, ensuring I have feedback that tailors learning their individual needs.
