Information About John:

Personal Description:

After leaving Westminster School, I trained as an actor at the Central School of Speech and Drama for three years. This led to a ten-year stint as a professional actor, after which I returned to full-time education as a mature student.

I studied Classics for eleven years, in London, Paris and Southampton, gaining a Ph.D. in Greek from Southampton University in 1989.

I also attended the Padagogische Hochschule, Freiburg, Germany, for a year, on a German-teaching course.

I was an examiner and coursework moderator in GCSE and 'A' Level Classical Civilisation for OCR and AQA exam boards from 1994 to 2011.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored Latin, Greek, Classical Civilisation and Ancient History since 1985. and have taught these subjects in the classroom, to students of all levels, aged 8 to 80, in private and public sector schools, universities (most recently Birkbeck College) and for the Workers' Educational Association.

I have also taught Mycenaean, Dark Age, Archaic and Classical Greek Archaeology in adult education.

I have taught French at Secondary School, and EFL in Paris and Bordeaux.

I run drama workshops, mainly in Greek Tragedy.

Tutoring Approach:

To instil confidence by discovering the student's own best way to learn.
