Information About Lachlan:

Personal Description:

I am a graduate in Politics, English and German with an International House qualification to teach English as a foreign language to adults.

For many years I was engaged on a university research and publishing project, based in London and Cambridge, that charted the reception of British and Irish authors in Europe, from Francis Bacon to James Joyce. A very significant part of the reception history of these authors focused on translations and interpretation in German.

A significant part of my professional role involves editing and proof-reading academic texts, and I'm happy to undertake this for tutees.

I am also a freelance researcher, writer and curator of exhibitions on contemporary social and political cartoons, such as 'Coping with the Relations', commissioned by the Goethe-Institut and British Council as an international touring exhibition. Amongst other publications I co-authored the book *Deutschland und seine Nachbarn* in 2000 as a resource for political education in German schools.

I am an enthusiastic European with a keen interest in global affairs.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring students in English, Politics and German for many years, as well as working as a business language trainer in companies across London. I currently teach in the Language Centre at Queen Mary University of London, where I primarily tutor postgraduate law students in critical thinking and writing.

In 2020 I became a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy acknowledging that my approach to teaching at university reflects sound pedagogical principles and contemporary practice.

Previously I taught English, German and Politics in England (GCSE and A-level), and English as a foreign language at all levels in grammar schools in Austria and Germany. I also taught English as a foreign language to trainee German teachers of English and for Academic & Special Purposes (law, business studies, social sciences) as well as British cultural studies at the University of Osnabruck, Germany, for 8 years.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe patience, appropriate pace and empathetic attention to an individual's learning needs are essential for anyone helping others to understand often complex ideas and concepts. I also believe successful learning results from both the learner's and teacher's motivation, enthusiasm and interest in the subject. These are principles that inform my role as a tutor.

I much prefer one-to-one or small-group tutoring, particularly where if a foreign language is involved. I believe the intensity of experience such interaction provides is the next best thing to direct engagement with a foreign language in the context in which it is naturally spoken. This is borne out by my own experience as a foreign-language learner.
