Victoria - Oxford tutor

Information About Victoria:

Personal Description:

I am young but have several years' experience across ages and subjects. I am currently completing a PGCE, and will be going on to a career in teaching next year, where I am looking forward to teaching in the city. I have moved to Oxford University from the University of Durham, where I obtained a First Class Honours degree.

I have a genuine passion for education and love making a difference to young people. I am likeable and enthusiastic, and extremely friendly, although I command respect.

Teaching Experience:

I taught English and Mathematics in Nepal for two months, in adverse conditions and to classes of up to fifty children at a time.

I have been tutoring for five years, and have had excellent results. Please contact me for references, as I have many happy tutees (and parents!) who have experienced this! I have tutored children and teenagers from varied backgrounds and at different ages and levels of ability. For some, it is not about getting an A, it is about realising your child's full potential.

At University I am Leader of the SCA Homework Club, which provides tuition in schools in Durham, using the skills of University students.

I have also completed several months' work experience in a variety of schools, both primary and secondary, and worked as a teaching assistant.

Tutoring Approach:

It varies very much between students. Some need to be reassured of their abilities, and worked gently through examples and questions. Others need a firmer approach and strong encouragement, whether it be to achieve their full potential or just to finish their homework!

I like to bring variety and try to make sessions fun, and build confidence by using different approaches to make students feel comfortable. I also enjoy playing educational games, particularly with younger students and using props to develop mental arithmetic skills, and frequently use tables races etc to aid memory.

I usually set students homework, and spend time planning this and the session. I will then mark the work and give feedback to students/parents as necessary. Often it is the case that practice makes perfect (!) and I have found this extremely positive in the past.
