Personal Description:

I am a 24 year old postgraduate student, currently reading for an MA in 20th century literature at University College London. I graduated from Oxford University in 2007 with a first class degree in English Language and Literature, and have since spent time working as a copy writer and private tutor.

Academically I have a particular interest in modern prose but am also well read in most other periods and genres, as well as European and American literature. I have a good knowledge of critical theory, a broad general knowledge of philosophy and a grounding in modern political literature.

In my spare time I enjoy listening to and performing music, and currently play guitar in a semi-professional funk band. I also enjoy writing, having edited both factual and satirical magazines, as well as traveling and socialising with friends.

Teaching Experience:

I have privately tutored English Literature and English Language to GCSE, AS and A Level students, as well as teaching on Global Education Counselling intensive revision courses at Mill Hill School. I also taught the guitar privately throughout my school career.

Tutoring Approach:

When tutoring I aim to create a relaxed and informal atmosphere and encourage tutees to offer personal responses to the texts they are studying, which I can then help to develop and put into context. I believe working directly with the text is the best way to develop a critical approach and the best way to form an argument that can be used as the basis of an essay or exam answer.

Particularly in arts and humanities subjects, every pupil has their own individual approach. I believe that rather than forcing a particular style upon a tutee it is best to identify and develop their personal strengths, whilst helping to counter their weaknesses.

I also offer guidance on writing style and exam and essay technique. Having completed my own education relatively recently I am well aware of the requirements of the GCSE and A Level systems, and am well placed to help tutees achieve results that match their potential.
