Stephen - Elgin tutor
Information About Stephen:
Personal Description:
Since September 2010 to the present day, I have worked as a lecturer at Moray College, teaching two different Higher English classes, about 35 students in total, and I have a wide range of experiences useful for tutoring. I still teach Higher English every year at the College but, unfortunately, numbers of applicants are currently lower and we only have one class.
Previously, from August 2007 to 2010, I was an English teacher in various secondary school. In Moray, I taught at Lossiemouth High School, where I successfully oversee the learning of a wide variety of young people from S1 to S6. I've previously worked in Speyside High School, Aberlour and Lochend High School, Easterhouse (Glasgow).
At Bannerman High School, I achieved straight A's across six Highers and three Advanced Highers. In 2006, I graduated from Glasgow University with a MA Joint Honours History and English Literature (first class). Through this education, I have developed excellent study skills and effective communication techniques.
As a volunteer youth worker, I am friendly, approachable and go out of my way to be as helpful as possible. I've worked with young people from many different backgrounds, whether attending Madras College in St Andrews or hanging out in Bargeddie, just outside Glasgow.
I really enjoy reading, discussing ideas and writing short pieces, particularly poetry.
Teaching Experience:
In Moray, I've worked in two different schools, helping local students achieve excellent results across all levels. As a College lecturer, I have developed my teaching skills and resources further with a wide range of students, especially those who have struggled to achieve in school environments. In Lochend, I have created numerous, pupil-centred resources to make learning more interesting and informative. I've also set and assessed Standard Grade and National Qualification test papers.
At Jordanhill teacher training college, I worked for ten weeks in Taylor High and another eight weeks in Lochend. I studied the most highly-regarded education practices and was tutored by an official SQA marker.
I also worked with an organisation called GOALS, which worked across schools in the West of Scotland to promote University and help prepare pupils for the transition to life as students.
Tutoring Approach:
I believe tutors must work together closely with the tutee to identify their individual targets, plan a pathway to reach their goals and tackle the challenges on route. This involves nurturing the creative flair and particular style of the tutee, within the rules of standard English writing. Readers must be trained to better explore, analyse and evaluate the texts to move understanding beyond the superficial.
Tutors should also provide high-quality feedback on tutee's work, which praises the strengths and sets-out clear strategies for further improvement. Finally, a tutee needs a comfortable atmosphere for learning and encouragement to keep going!
If you choose online tutoring, which has real benefits in terms of time saved in travel, there are an increasing number of tools available to facilitate quality tuition. A typical arrangement would have a core one-hour online chat time when quality discussion can take place. Concerns can be addressed promptly and questions asked to check understanding. In between times, I always endeavour to assess and feedback on any and every relevant item of work that a tutee submits as part of the package. My notes are detailed, insightful and extensive with the chance for follow-up at the next tutoring hour, or via email.
In terms of availability, I like to tutor at Moray College in the various public spaces on the main campus or use Elgin library, both of which have worked very well in the past.
