Teaching Experience:
My teaching has reading and listening at it's heart. The best thing I have done since coming to London is open my ears to all the styles I didn't like, listen over and over, until they started to grow on me! Music is a cultural and historical lesson as well, it's interesting to see where the popular styles of today came from! Reading will just make you more employable as all the session, musical theatre and holiday camp drummers will tell you! I use software such as Noteflight which allows me to playback scores, making sight reading an easier and more enjoyable process, and meaning I can share scores with students via email. Each student is also given a video recording of what we studied in the lesson, which is a very valuable resource, something they can take away from each lesson, and makes remembering what we learned much easier!

I come from a family where music is extremely important. At school, my first band was a rock covers band where my brother played bass. We played regularly in pubs in Dorset, (you may have heard of the Teddy Rocks festival, we played in the very first festival and have played with my band Last Resort ever since). I'm a writer, composer, director and artist, and prizewinning History finalist at the University of Oxford, with experience of a broad range of learning environments and teaching styles, and substantial industry experience in music and the creative arts. Deeply passionate about my subjects, I'm dedicated to each of my students and enthusiastic about sharing the joy of learning with them. A student's personal goals are always at the centre of their development and I like to approach tutoring on an individual basis, as, particularly with music, every student learns in a way unique to them. The first lesson is generally spent getting to know students (and vice versa), understanding the approaches that work best for them and building a much needed rapport. I feel strongly that students must feel at ease and thus able to express themselves freely in lessons, as this will transfer in their music.

Areas covered will include the student's chosen instrument (can be more than one), music theory, harmony, technique, timing, technology (using DAWs or Sibelius), working within band/ensemble contexts (both musically and socially) and self-development, which includes the study of practice methods, mentality and motivation. I spent my work experience in my secondary school as a teachers assistant, supporting in year 7-10 music lessons (aged 11-16). Throughout this I helped out with organising lesson plans, whilst also advising and guiding students during their work periods.

Alongside this, I also have experience running workshops with younger primary school students (6-8 years old) these were more lighthearted, friendly introductions into music as a subject.

You've probably heard of the 80/20 rule, the theory being that you achieve 80% of your results from only 20% of your efforts. Well, with drumming, you could refine that to the 90/10 rule, or even the 97/3 rule.

The fact is that you can learn 97% of your technical, rhythmical, coordination, and timekeeping abilities with about only 3% of the tens of thousands of possible patterns, exercises, and rhythms that are out there. It's simply a case of knowing which 3%... and that's where I come in.
