My name is Haidee, I'm a 19 year old from Liverpool studying French at The University of Liverpool. (I often go to Kirkby and Fazackerly to work and see family so would often be available to tutor in that area too). In school I sat my GCSE early at the age of 14 (year 9), passing with a B. I then continued to study French for the final two years of school and passed again with an A*. In my time in college I spent a week each year in Montpellier living with a French family and attending a French language school, which I really enjoyed and feel helped me with my learning.

This is my first time trying tutoring, but I often helped my sister with her French to GCSE level. I also helped a friend of mine who struggled in school to pass her English and Maths GCSE by using imaginative teaching and memory techniques, to which she was very grateful. Due to having friends that also study languages I am used to being able to help others in areas in which they struggle. I have worked with children and young adults from age 2-18 part-time for the past 3 years and so would be comfortable teaching from all ages.

Throughout my learning experience I have found that it is best to learn the basic rules and grammar of a language from the start, as this has made it easier to build on this. My teaching approach to tutoring varies from objective to objective. Languages should always be taught in a full immersion style, especially when it is targeting groups of people who are doing it for either vocational or personal reasons.
Tutoring of subjects such as languages with an objective such as GCSE or Highers or indeed University exams must take into account the syllabus that students must complete in order to reach their target: i.e. pass exams and, at the same time, learn in an effective though 'unforgettable' way. The majority of classes must be delivered in the target language, however in order to meet timing of syllabus coverage and exams some of the concept must be strengthened in the student's language.
In an ideal world, where no exams or timed targets exist, then tutoring of a language should happen 100% in the target language.

In my role I had to make sure that I delivered my teaching to specific objectives, to deliver the best learning to the pupils. Learning a foreign language is a process that implies some mimicking, language awareness, practice on comprehension, expression and also creativity. Some studies claim that the way we store languages in our brains is similar to that of data storing in a computer, but, of course, much more human, organic and alive. Languages have different components that need to be acquired and "stored" so that we can start feeling confident and creative in using them.

On the other hand, languages are a set of sounds, words (vocabulary), rules (grammar), expressions and even non-verbal language that are acquired both consciously and unconsciously. Conscious learning is a process in which I am extremely interested because it feels as if we are actually helping our minds to store the data so they can be available for us to use. This can be called monitored learning or instruction and it is an important part of the teaching activity: basically providing the tools for the learner to feel comfortable, confident and free using them.

Languages open the door to exciting opportunities in life and providing children with language skills at an age when they are most receptive to absorbing information will allow them to make the most of these in future.

My time in school and as a private tutor has developed my philosophy of valuing each student as an individual, as well as part of a community. I aim to give me students as many learning opportunities and experiences as possible in order to engage, motivate to take more responsibility for their own learning.

I feel it is essential to make learning exciting and creative; therefore, I always make my lessons interactive, give students choices and relate teaching program to their point of interest.

Personal Description:
I taught French for 10 years in a school in Cardiff and left to concentrate on my educational website. The site, which is used by teachers in schools, provides interactive activities for language learners. After I gave up my job as a school teacher, I started tutoring in my free time as well because helping pupils was a side of my work that I really missed.

Teaching Experience:
1991 - 2002: I worked as a French teacher in Llanishen High School in Cardiff, Wales. I taught pupils from Year 7 all the way to Year 13

2003-2004: I worked as a consultant for a couple of training agencies, running IT courses for MFL teachers.

2001-2018: I created my own company "Language Skills", dedicated to the creation of activities for language teachers and students to use online


2001-2018: I've been a French tutor for GCSE and A 'Level pupils as well as adult learners from complete beginners to advanced level.

At the moment, I am tutoring an engineering lecturer who love speaking French and who has general conversation sessions to increase his vocab and his confidence. I have worked with him for 5 years.
I also tutor an 11-year-old pupil who I have helped for the past 4 years.

Tutoring Approach:
I know how hard and frustrating it can be to learn a new language. As a native French speaker, I had to learn English as a second language myself.
My approach is centred around the leaner and I will adapt my teaching methods to suit your needs, whether it be by preparing you for an exam, helping if you are struggling in class or just giving you the confidence to speak French.
