I am a highly experienced, enthusiastic and very versatile optical engineering senior lecturer/researcher, who gained a PhD from the School of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences, City University, London, UK in "Fibre optical temperature and strain sensors using fluorescent techniques" for measurement applications using the fluorescence generated from rare earth-doped optical fibres (e.g. Er3+, Yb3+, Tm3+ etc.). I also possess very good experience and knowledge of industry, with excellent complimentary skills gained from higher education - in particular industrial measurement, forensic analysis, quality control and statistical analysis. A BSc first degree in forensic science is combined with a further specialist MSc in engineering metrology and topped with a PhD in photonics - making for good, broad-based, multi-disciplined measurement science and analytical capabilities right across the scientific spectrum. Abstract

The author presents a thesis based upon the use of the fluorescent properties of rare earth doped materials. The thesis commences with a review of the current fibre sensor technology in the field, with special emphasis on those sensors designed for temperature and strain measurement. The use of the physical phenomena of fluorescence produced from rare earth doped optical fibre for temperature measurement is then introduced and explained in more detail, particularly with regard to utilisation of the fluorescence lifetime technique in such sensing, which is then compared to the other fluorescence-based methods for measuring temperature.

The recently discovered small strain sensitivity of the fluorescence lifetime is then introduced as a theoretical candidate for potential application to simultaneous temperature-strain sensing, using two different doped fibres in a single sensing element, and subsequently state-of-the-art temperature-strain discrimination techniques are then explored for the purposes of exploitation to dual measurement.

Results achieved from using the fluorescent lifetime approach for a range of rare earth materials are then presented, followed by further results obtained from combining the lifetime technique with Fibre Bragg gratings (FBGs) for the first time. Also, the irreversible effects upon FBG performance after exposure to long-term high temperatures are explored.

Finally, there is a summary of the work presented in this thesis and the author's opinions on achievements made. Current trends in fluorescence lifetime-based sensing are discussed, both commercially and academically, together with projected work for the future.

I am a UK qualified teacher with 20 years teaching experience. I graduated from Loughborough University with a BSc in Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry in 2003 and a year later completed my post graduate certificate in Education at the same university. Personal Description:
As an A level student at one of the top Grammar schools in the country (Queen Elizabeth's Boys School) I know exactly what it takes to achieve the top grades in GCSE Biology, Chemistry, Maths. I myself acheived very high grade 9s in these subjects at GCSE so I know what the mark scheme requires first hand. I can teach you the tips and tricks that I used in order to obtain these grades. I am passionate about the passing on of knowledge to younger students so that they can achieve their academic goals. I understand learning can be challenging and that is why I will motivate students to love the subjects they study.

Teaching Experience:
I have experience in tutoring children in KS3 Science both at Queen Elizabeth's Boys School and elsewhere and I have developed a deep understanding for how to help students achieve their potential.
In addition, I currently tutor students part time at my school for their GCSE exams and work as a mentor for many students who are hoping to ace their exams.
I have developed a wide range of effective teaching methods that I can successfully tailor to individuals. I believe all students can achieve their goal with the right support and guidance.

I understand that all students have unique needs and learning styles. I always feel it is best to identify the strengths and weaknessses in the subject so I can plan a good course to follow to better undestand and prepare studetns for the exams.

I am a full-time, highly experienced science tutor and academic mentor, specialising in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics from GCSE through to undergraduate level. With a Ph.D. in Biochemistry, a postgraduate certificate in Higher Education Teaching, and Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), I bring over two decades of expertise in high-level education.

My career spans senior teaching, research, and leadership positions across universities, independent sixth forms, and specialist schools. I provide targeted support for students preparing for medical, dental, and bioscience degree applications, including entrance exams such as the BMAT, UCAT, and university-specific assessments. I work extensively with academically ambitious students attending top-tier independent and selective schools, as well as international learners and home-educated pupils seeking exceptional, personalised science tuition.

I have a particular strength in supporting neurodiverse students, having spent eight years teaching science in specialist schools for the National Autistic Society. My background combines subject expertise, leadership experience, and a strong understanding of both mainstream and individualised educational pathways.

Working in research and teaching at several UK universities, I served as Head of Science and Academic Partnerships, where I led curriculum design, academic strategy, and cross-institutional collaborations. I taught Biochemistry, Biomedical Science, and Molecular Biology, and supervised undergraduate research and dissertations.
