I studied Creative Arts at the University of Wollongong, NSW, Australia, worked as an artist for several years before deciding on a career in the catering industry.

I also do photography for my own enjoyment, specifically looking at landscape and architectural photography. I am Marcin Bernard, an artist and art educator who mainly specialises in painting and sculpting on wood and stone. I have been painting and sculpting since twelve years of age. I genuinely enjoy working together with the students. When I conducted a stone carving workshop at NIE( National Institute of Education) in Singapore, where I taught students how to transfer 2D ideas to 3D but carving directly onto limestone, it can be an upheaval task for students but to scaffold them to visualise their plan, see through the process from beginning to the end, problem-solving, tweaking, translating the 2D idea into 3D effectively, seeing them succeed and execute, gave me the feeling of satisfaction and joy. I realise then this is what I want to do, to teach. It was very different from an artist satisfaction.

My approach is to find out the strength as interest of my students and to guide them to develop them and also to work ideas and think through their narratives and purpose of their work of art or art project. It can also be skill based if the child wants to develop skills, or to facilitate help towards their academic but as well discover the artistic talent in them while working towards their academic projects.

Every student is different and I would contribute by imparting skills such as observation, analytical cognitive processes, technical ability such as drawing, painting, sculpting. I have recently moved to Sheringham after teaching art in London for several years. I am now focusing on my career as an illustrator and, parallel to that, I am interested in offering private tuition to CGSE and A-Level students completing their Art & Design or Photography course.

As an artist and educator I find it very fulfilling to help others explore and develop their artistic skills. In my own work, I enjoy drawing, painting with acrylics and oil and using Photoshop to create digital illustrations. It is very important that each student feels the artwork they create during their GCSE or A-Level course is personal and meaningful to them.

During my tutoring sessions I focus on my student's interests in terms of themes and techniques and plan a series of small achievable goals for them to complete, including the homework set by the school teacher. Each task is checked for quality and completion before we move on to the next task. I provide direction in terms of research and references to inspire the student, based on their chosen themes, as well as examples and tutorials on using a range of materials and techniques. At the end of each session I communicate with the parent/carer and give them a clear report on what progress has been made and what tasks I have set to be completed for our next session.

It is important to understand that my role can only be to guide and demonstrate and not complete the work for the student, as this work would not be allowed in the student's GCSE/A-Level portfolio.

Having taught these courses, I know how demanding they are, but I also know how rewarding it can be for students to unlock their creative potential, given the right support.

I work as an Associate Lecturer on the BA Painting Programme at Camberwell College of Arts (University of the Arts London), as a mentor on the Turps Painting Programme and was invited to be a Visiting Artist at Goldsmiths for 2023, and again for 2024. I am also a Dissertation Supervisor for Final Year students at Camberwell on their BA Programme. I also teach writing for a wide variety of audiences. I am a practicing artist based in London, specializing in painting, and I have been showing my work nationally and internationally.
