I am a 57 year old lady, born in England and I have a passion for teaching English as a Foreign Language.
I originally qualified as a nurse and spent many years working within the NHS before moving to Malta in 2014 and completing my TELT and TEFL qualifications.

After I qualified in 2016,I worked at an English Language School on Gozo, Malta and I originally started teaching small groups of students at an elementary level. My lessons included all aspects of English.For example, grammar, vocabulary, speaking, writing, listening, spelling and pronunciation and I taught all age groups from the ages of 5 years of age to 80 years of age.
After teaching one particular student on a one to one basis for a number of months, I soon realised that I really enjoyed this method of teaching as opposed to teaching groups of students, as my lessons could be tailor made to suit the individual's needs.
As a result of my Nursing background, I also found myself teaching English to Paramedics, Medical Students and Midwives which I thoroughly enjoyed as I could combine both my medical knowledge with my knowledge of the English language.
I built a particularly good, professional relationship with one student who, once she had left school and returned to her native country, we continued to have Skype lessons in pure, conversational English.

I feel that each student has individual needs, strengths and weaknesses and these should be discussed openly at the initial meeting in order for lessons and their content to be planned according to the student's requirements.

I am a PhD candidate at Cardiff University, where I research contemporary forms of subtitling. I have a Master's Degree in Translation Studies - for which I received a high Distinction and Best Postgraduate Dissertation - and a Bachelor's Degree in French and Spanish - for which I was awarded First-class Honours and an Excellence Scholarship. I have also been awarded a Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy in recognition of my teaching contributions at Cardiff University, where I have taught undergraduate French and Spanish language, history, and culture for four years.

I have lived in both Toulouse, France and Barcelona, Spain, where I was able to immerse myself fully in French, Spanish, and Catalan language and culture respectively. My passion for languages has very much informed my choice of career so far, both academic and professional.

I know from first-hand experience that learning a language has the most profound impact, giving the learner an insight and a pathway into entirely new cultures, perspectives, and ways of life. I have amassed a broad range of teaching and coaching experiences in recent years. These include, most recently, preparing and delivering seminars on Spanish and French language, translation, and culture to undergraduate students at Cardiff University. I will always ensure you feel prepared to undertake this work which will serve to practice basic understanding as well as pushing you into thinking carefully about how to apply your working knowledge. We would always agree a manageable amount to be completed by an agreed deadline. However, I may also need to be flexible with this as, of course, workloads and pressures can vary during a school year. The fact that you are comfortable raising this issue, means that we can easily work around the matter and reach a solution which eases the situation for you.

I would also offer all my support and experience in helping you prepare for any tests or final exams. There is a lot which can be done to help you mathematically, mentally and psychologically prepare for these stressful events.

Also provided as the result of every lesson, will be a pdf of the notes and work we undertook in a session. This maximises the learning potential in a session as the student is focused on the work being done and undertaking worked questions, and removing the need to 'take notes' and 'keep up'.

I thoroughly enjoy teaching children the love of reading and will focus on exam skills and strategies by breaking down the content into manageable chunks so that my students achieve their very best.

Teaching Experience:
I am a qualified teacher of Secondary English from KS3 up to GCSE and A Level and have been teaching in West Sussex schools for over 20 years. I have a degree in English, PGCE, and MA in Education.
I am currently teaching at a comprehensive Secondary school in West Sussex and cover the AQA syllabus. Although this is my specialism I also have experience in Edexcel and OCR exam boards. I have also been an examiner for AQA for many years and use this experience to help my students understand how to break down the questions and understand the marking criteria.

Tutoring Approach:
I am able to break down the current GCSE requirements from all exam boards and coach young people in a way that they can understand.
I work at the pace set by the student and help them in such a way that they feel a sense of achievement after every lesson.
In negotiation with the student I can set weekly homework tasks as part of the tutoring session if required and also include the marking of these in my fee. I am very flexible and can offer short term help on GCSE English Language or long term support to cover both Language and Literature. Online tutoring and booster sessions in school holidays are also available.
