Personal Description:
I am an experienced chemistry teacher and A-level examiner. I have been a private tutor in chemistry and maths since 2002 with excellent results and consistently good feedback. All students are welcome, whether working towards first-time examinations, resits, or needing support and confidence through the course. As well as teaching and supporting all areas of A-level and GCSE chemstry, I spend time with students on study skills, revision technique and exam technique. These are areas which are sometimes given little attention in schools but are central to student's success and the development of their potential.

Both my private tuition and work as a teacher have benefitted from my work as an external examiner for AS chemistry, on-going since 2004. This gives me an invaluable insight not only in terms of subject knowledge but also towards exam preparation and technique. I am married with a daughter at university and a son at college. I am interested in many different things, from sports to wildlife. I think I am friendly and fun, and because I have tried learning foreign languages myself, am sympathetic towards my students needs!

I have actually taught TEFL for about 10 years (and have been in the TEFL business for much longer, publishing books for TEFL). I have taught A-Level Economics for the last 2 years at a non-selective private school. Last year, 1/4 of my students achieved 100 UMS at A2 and 1/3 achieved an A*. One student had achieved a D at AS and finished with an A* with a UMS average of 95. Prior to this, I played and coached sport at an International Level so have a real understanding of learning and how to help people improve, often starting with behavioural change and combining this with activities to maximise the students' learning. I also tutored several students last year including a mature student, all achieved the grades they required.

I use nudges to change behaviours in my students on an individual basis. We need to get to the stage where the student is comfortable teaching the subject matter to me and the whole course is connected rather than studied in isolation. I am recently retired from full-time teaching and live in the Durham area with my family including two teenage daughters along with our faithful dog, Charlie.
My specialism is Physics. After many years teaching I think I understand why some students find it so tough and I always try to use real life examples and analogies to help students with their learning and understanding.

I taught for most of my career, more than 30 years in a large comprehensive school in Newcastle.
I have held a number of posts including an extended period as Head of Physics.
Specifications and schemes of work change far more than they used to but the fundamentals of Physics remain the same and a good grasp of key concepts is the essential foundation for success at all levels.

I love the buzz and performance element of classroom teaching particularly with A level and GCSE students, but I think I am equally at home teaching in small groups and with one to one individual teaching. ever since starting tutoring my aim has always been to cater to the needs of the tutee.
i.e. I have tutored Spanish A level in the past so the aim here was to improve at grammar skills, therefore the focus of the tutoring sessions would mostly be on exam preparation questions, topics that may come up and then 15-2o mins of the session would focus on other areas such as speaking, listening, reading, writing.
