Katrina - Bristol tutor
Information About Katrina:
Personal Description:
My name is Katrina and I'm currently studying at UWE doing a History degree. I am a qualified Basic Expedition Leader which means I am qualified to teach and lead Duke of Edinburgh Award groups up to Silver standard. I have achieved the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award and was recently nominated for an award for the work I do with young people voluntarily.
I have always enjoyed helping others and did my work experience in a primary school year 1 and 2 class which was an enjoyable experience. I also did my work placement in my AS year in a secondary school assisting the teachers with a wide range of pupils all of differing abilities. This gave a huge insight into different teaching methods and I felt I took a huge amount of learning from it.
Teaching Experience:
Despite my age I feel I have a large amount of experience in working with Children. I am a Basic Expedition Leader meaning I can lead a group of young people undertaking the Duke Of Edinburgh Award. This shows not only my ability to teach the necessary and vital skills for this award such as navigation, compass work and route cards but my passion and dedication to help young people enjoy the experiences I was fortunate to have whilst undertaking my own Duke Of Edinburgh Award.
This role also means I am responsible for them whilst they are out hiking which shows I take on a role of responsibility in ensuring they are safe at all times. Also the Route cards involve a lot of work with Mathematics such as working out total distances, times for arrival and suitable break time, this shows how, despite not having done Math since GCSE, I have kept working with figures.
During my time at school I was a 'study buddy' which involved me helping a new year 7 to adjust to school life and helping them with homework and in lessons they were struggling in. These experiences, I feel, provide me with the skills and knowledge to not only help students and young people academically but also engage them in a fun and interactive way to make learning a more enjoyable experience.
Tutoring Approach:
I will take something the tutee already knows and attempt to implement it into the teaching, e.g. if someone was a football fan we could look at this in relation to Math problems.
I always attempt to make it fun and enjoyable as generally no-one would choose extra work therefore I aim to make it as enjoyable as possible. In my own experience I have found this is a better method of teaching. An example is teaching Duke of Edinburgh because this is an extra curricular activity and therefore the young people don't necessarily want to spend another 2 hours of learning. However it is the only way to keep them safe in wild country therefore I do much of my teaching through games to keep them engaged and enthused.
