Hannah - Bristol tutor
Information About Hannah:
Personal Description:
I am currently studying for a PhD in Neuroscience (connections in the brain underlying learning and memory) at Bristol University. I have a 2:1 degree in Physiology & Pharmacology and a Masters degree in Applied Biosciences (specialising in Neuroscience) from Nottingham Trent University. I have A-levels in Biology, Chemistry and French.
Teaching Experience:
I have experience teaching 1st/2nd year Medical and Veterinary undergraduate students; demonstrating practical laboratory classes and taking small tutorial groups.
My experiences as both a student and a tutor mean I understand some of the difficulties students face in learning new topics and applying their knowledge. I have often been told that I'm approachable and give clear, concise explanations. I recently received 'teacher of the year award' from Bristol University for my efforts.
I am currently in the process of having my CRB check.
Tutoring Approach:
I find that understanding concepts and application of knowledge is an extremely important aspect of science that many students find difficult to master. As a result, this is something I focus on to help students progress in their studies beyond the classroom (helping students to think for themselves).
Practice in essay/scientific report writing and answering examination questions will, in addition to reading, form an integral part of tutoring sessions and homework (if homework is required). Mathematical problems in Biology, including statistics, will also be included in tutoring sessions where necessary.
I will cover exam board syllabus but, of course, pay special attention to those topics that the student struggles with. It can be intimidating to admit that you don't understand something in front of a classroom of peers, and so I think it is important that students feel at ease during tutoring sessions, can feel free to ask questions and take learning at their own pace. If you can interest someone in a topic, they will find it much easier to learn and this is what I hope to achieve!
I am very willing to offer help (via email, or telephone if appropriate) to tutees outside of tutoring hours and I am very patient, understanding, friendly and approachable.
