Cheng - Milton of Campsie tutor
Information About Cheng:
Personal Description:
I am seventeen years old, holding a deferred place at Cambridge university for Natural Sciences (Physics). I went to school in Scotland, where the Higher qualifications system is generally seen as more rigorous than the A levels. My gap year has taken me to Oxford, where I am working for an engineering firm and living with five amazing Oxford University graduate students. I would love to include teaching in my exploration of the real world - to be able to pass knowledge onto others, and see that sparkle in their eyes. I look forward to it greatly.
Teaching Experience:
I have previously tutored Higher (equivalent to AS) Mathematics and Physics, but I certainly have no official teaching qualifications. I have however always enjoyed, and often succeeded, in teaching others. My classmates say they treat me as more of an authority than my teachers - but I do not wish to come across like that. In all my subjects across Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics, I found the content to be not concisely nor clearly taught. And so I made my own notes - which can be as short as 10 pages for an entire subject - that I find to be all that one needs to ace at the exams, and more importantly properly digest the syllabus. Indeed, my friends agree that what seemed so daunting was deep down so simple and sometimes elegant - that they think my explanation was not even that important! I smile at that, of course, happy that they comprehend and not memorise. I have also helped my mother to return to education, by showing her that A level/Higher mathematics is not as complex as she thought.
Tutoring Approach:
It is simple - I focus on understanding, and skills of analysis. At Advanced higher level at least, the easiest way to achieve an A is not even exam orientated teaching, in my opinion - because there are really not so many fundamental concepts to master (except in pure mathematics). I ask them to forget the "tricks" that they have been taught, and give them, in full honesty and clarity, the firm foundations from the beginning. These are both the deep rooted concepts, as well as methods of analysis. Further on in the teaching process then, I would find that they can pick up things so quickly, so self-initiated and renewed with confidence - they often no longer need my help!
