Personal Description:

My name is Miles and I am 36 years old. I am originally from Plymouth, and went to school at Devonport High for Boys. I have worked as a teacher since graduating from the University of Warwick in 1999 with a degree in History. At the end of university I studied English Language Teaching in Spain through Oxford House College, where I received my TESOL Certificate, before heading to South Korea. I spent several years in East Asia, principally in Taiwan, where I worked as a teacher of young and very young learners (using English as the medium to teach all curriculum subjects), and then later specifically teaching adults at an exam preparation school. During this time, I gained considerable experience as a teacher trainer as well. I completed an MA in ELT and Applied Linguistics through King's College in London in 2009. Since then, I have trained formally as a Primary School Teacher, gaining my QTS four years ago. My family and I live inTavistock, and I am currently working as a Y5/6 Primary Teacher at a school in Plymouth. I am the Head of Humanities, and I take a lead roll in PE in the school, as well as our Outdoor Learning programmes. I have led Literacy in Year 6 for the last two years.

On a personal note, I have a wide variety of interests. I'm a keen runner (as you see in my photo) and love reading and writing. Most non-work time, though, is spent with my family - I have two girls who keep me busy!



Teaching Experience:

I have roughly nine years experience teaching English as a Foreign Language to both children and adults. This has been in a variety of settings. I am currently in my fourth year of Primary teaching. I teach all subjects in the national curriculum, but have particular expertise in English and Maths at primary level, and English and History at a more advanced level.

I have worked extensively as a tutor before, and have considerable experience supporting learners in preparation for formal assessments, in particular the IELTS examination.



Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is guided by a more general philosophy related to teaching, which is that lessons and instruction need to be adapted according to the needs of those learning. I believe in being well-prepared, but also in being flexible and creative, and helping my students help themselves. I think that a voice of encouragement is very important, but that equally important is realism and practical advice. I tutor intensively, and do not believe in wasting time, or leaving a session without feeling as though something has been accomplished or achieved. Saying this, I am far from being a stern master. I would consider myself open, relaxed, confident and engaging as a teacher, as well as being knowledgeable about my particular disciplines.
