Rebecca - Pontypridd tutor
Information About Rebecca:
Personal Description:
Good afternoon, my name is Rebecca B. Fern and I would like to be considered for the research assistant position within the CATS Study at your university. I graduated from Wheaton College in 2005 with a Bachelors degree with honours in Psychology and Sociology and continued my education the following autumn at the University of Leeds where I completed my Masters degree in Gender Studies.
I am a very enthusiastic, gregarious 25 year old woman who moved to the UK this past August subsequent to marrying a lovely Welshman. I enjoy music, theatre, traveling, rugby, football and most importantly, reading and writing. I have incredible patience and my listening skills are envied by many, qualities I feel are particularly essential to a mentoring role.
I have a relentless passion for learning and have found that it is in education where my heart truly lies. I am presently working as Programme Administrator of the Masters in Education and Graduate Diploma in Education at Swansea Metropolitan University and am thereby already immersed in the educational sphere.
Teaching Experience:
Despite endless hours of babysitting as a teenager, it was my mentoring experiences at university which provided me with my foundational experiences in interacting with children and teenagers. During my first year at university, I joined an after-school outreach program for at-risk children in our local community who primarily came from unstable home environments. We were responsible for interacting with these children for a few hours in the evenings, a time where, in our so-called sanctuary, they felt completely safe from the precariousness and violence of their home environments. The following summer, I was selected as a HERO (Higher Education Readiness Opportunity) mentor for a group of thirty first-generation college students. I was responsible for supervising both their academic and behavioural performance during their residential stay at my university where they were offered a glimpse into the academic and social sphere of university. Later, during my second, as well as my final year at university, I was selected as a preceptor (mentor) for a group of eighteen first-year students enduring their transition to university life. I was responsible for taking them through the orientation week and introductory activities, as well as acting as their student advisor, thereby monitoring their academic and social performance throughout their initial year at university. Collectively, these experiences provided me with the stepping stones to gaining confidence in my ability to successfully lead and instruct and in my capacity to communicate with individuals across the ages, regardless of their background.
Tutoring Approach:
I have an innate passion and drive to help others in need. In my experience I have found that even the offering of help can be incredibly valuable and motivational for others. It can act as a wake up call, as if to say "someone else has recognised that I am struggling" and furthermore encourages them to take action to better their situation.
I firmly believe that in order to excel at anything in life, you must enjoy the journey to your destination. Furthermore, I feel that if you can (forgive the cliche) make learning "fun" for individuals of any age, they are less likely to resist your assistance and more likely to invest greater interest in the learning process.
