Richard - Swindon tutor

Information About Richard:

Personal Description:

Currently hold a Master's degree in Earth Sciences at Cambridge University. I have just completed a Masters degree in Hydrogeology at Birmingham University. My degree specialism is Earth Sciences. During my Bachelor's degree I studied a variety of subjects including Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry in addition to Geology. I am therefore well prepared to tutor to of A-levels standard.

I have just returned to Swindon before moving to Australia. I go in early February, so I'm available until then.

Teaching Experience:

I have extensive experience with tutoring undergraduates as a Master's student. This was generally on a 2 or 3 to one basis, but the situation is essentially the same as with a 1 to 1 situation. I have also tutored for Oxbridge tutors, both in the specific subject areas mentioned above and on successful strategies for getting into Oxbridge. I have general experience with working with younger students through work at Science Festivals and with Time Truck, an outreach program of the Cambridge Earth Sciences department which involved visiting local schools to teach young children about the Earth and environment.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach varies depending on the needs of the tutor. Sessions can either be tailored towards exam success or a general education in the sciences - or, where appropriate, a combination of the two. I feel that I am particularly well placed to deliver a general education in the physical sciences, having been educated to a high level in most areas.

My approach to tutoring is highly supportive. I find that a key to success is to establish a tutee's abilities and working level quickly. Material can then be tailored to their needs, which means that a student can be stretched without scaring or putting them off. This is one of the major benefits of 1 to 1 or small group tutoring.

One area I am particularly keen on is bringing in relevant examples or questions from unfamiliar subject areas or contexts. I find that this is an extremely effective way of stretching a tutee without pushing them beyond their abilities. This keeps material fresh and interesting. With luck this method allows me to engage the most reluctant of tutees in an new area. I have often found that if a tutee is fired up about a subject area then half of the battle is already won!

I have also found being relatively young to be a benefit. I remember the process of learing vividly and find it easy to engage with tutees.
