James - Newport tutor

Information About James:

Personal Description:

I am currently a 21-year-old student at the University of Oxford, where I am reading Law with Law Studies in Europe (German Law). I am a driven, highly-organised individual and very passionate about education and academic improvement. Having recently completed my school studies, I am aware of what it takes to achieve academic excellence in examinations and am also able to offer useful revision strategies.

My strengths lie in English, German and Maths tuition. I am also a pianist and would therefore be able to offer some tuition for those wishing to begin learning the piano, or indeed, anyone needing tuition in music theory.

As I mentioned above however, I am still undertaking university studies, and therefore, though I am very flexible at the moment, from October onwards I will be returning to Oxford to continue my studies. I am sure some arrangements can be made however, if you should wish your tuition to continue.

Teaching Experience:

For around 4 years, I worked as a Senior Assistant at a Kumon Centre. These tuition centres primarily focus on helping school children to improve and build-on their Maths and English skills. I have therefore worked with children of all ages and of all abilities.

In addition to working at Kumon, I further undertook a two-year programme helping 11-12 year olds with reading difficulties to improve their skills.

I have also provided some private piano and German language instruction in the past, mostly to adults.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a reasonably relaxed person, who adopts a fairly flexible and adaptive approach to tutoring. After my experience at Kumon and elsewhere, I understand the necessity of building on basic and key skills before advancing too readily. Once these building-blocks have been established, progression becomes so much easier for the pupil. I am therefore very thorough ensuring that each stage is understood and that the pupil is always comfortable before progressing, although this must also be balanced with challenging pupils to the appropriate extent. I believe repetition is key to reinforcing knowledge. Furthermore, although I am willing to help pupils prepare solely for exams, I believe in the importance of education in itself and for its own merit, and in this way, the pupil can explore those aspects of the subject that interest them and stimulate them the most, and not simply sticking to curriculum targets.
