Simon - Leeds tutor
Information About Simon:
Personal Description:
A committed tutor and examiner, I am motivated by a desire to improve students' basic grasp of English and to introduce great literature (and/or linguistics studies) to as many people as possible.
My main interests include literature, music, film and the arts; I also enjoy cycling and camping.
I am thirty years old, and attempt to retain the fitness levels of my youth by cycling to lessons - whatever the weather.
Teaching Experience:
In addition to teaching undergraduate seminars, I have worked as a private English tutor for five years (full-time for the past three). Predominantly coaching GCSE and 'A' Level (Language, Literature, and Language and Literature courses spanning the various boards/specifications), my broad experience allows me to successfully assist students across the ability range.
Moreover, I have been a GCSE English examiner for the past four years - assessing a paper that comprises writing and literary-analysis skills. This work has provided invaluable insight into examination performance and technique, and allows me to coach students to achieve the optimum results.
Tutoring Approach:
Regardless of the course or ability level, my initial approach is to address the student's grasp of basic English skills; despite their importance in assessed work, competent spelling, punctuation and grammar is an increasing rarity and tends not be tackled in schools and colleges. Though an on-going process, the attainment of these skills provides the foundations for success in examinations and other assessed work. Having tutored many students of disparate ages and levels, I am comfortable to devise a programme of study or to liaise with students (and/or parents) in order to provide optimal support for the unique requirements of each individual. I supply worksheets and past papers (in addition to mock papers that I have written), and, resulting from my experience as an examiner, generally prioritise exam practice and skills. I am comfortable to set, and mark, homework as required. Most importantly, particularly with younger children, I attempt to make the subject as enjoyable as possible by incorporating the student's own interest and hobbies into the sessions; English should never be dull!
In most cases, one-hour, weekly sessions are recommended
