Helen - Reading tutor

Information About Helen:

Personal Description:

I am a friendly and caring person with a love for learning and for facilitating the learning of others.

I have a BA(Hons) in English Studies from the University of Durham and am currently doing an MA in modern and contemporary literature at the University of Reading.

I am also a keen musician and play violin, piano and self-taught saxophone.

Teaching Experience:

I have done voluntary work at a primary school with children aged 4-7, assisting their learning through play and games, hearing them read, and ensuring that concentration is maintained during the tasks set them.

I have also assisted younger family friends with revision techniques for GCSEs.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that the importance of being self-aware about our own learning styles can never be underestimated. Once we understand the particular ways in which we process, learn and express information, it suddenly becomes a lot easier to tackle the things that are thrown at us and to deal with specific areas of weakness.

With this in mind, my approach to tutoring will be largely focused on helping the tutee to develop tools that will allow them to become independent learners. I will tailor my methods to the needs of the tutee, concentrating particularly on material they feel uncertain about, but also looking at more general aspects if required or pertinent.

I would be willing to tutor English at all stages of development up to first year undergraduate level. At this higher level, my tutoring would be focusing less on content than on techniques: proof-reading and essay techniques, exam revision and developing critical thinking.

I took History to A2 Level and have covered most periods to a greater or lesser extent. At GCSE and A-level, this has included a more in-depth study of the Tudor monarchy and the rebellions and religious changes that occurred during this time; the Spanish monarchy in the same period; the events of both World Wars; the effect of the Great Depression (1930s) on Germany and the USA; and an overview of the Cold War.

I have taken Maths to AS Level and have a number of methods that are designed to help overcome the frustration and anxiety that is often felt when answers don't come easily. I also have a basic knowledge of French that would be suitable for tutoring someone in the fundamental principles and vocabulary of the language.
