Longina - Watford tutor
Information About Longina:
Personal Description:
I have lived in Watford since 1993, a town just to the north west of London with a recently growing Polish community. I am preparing / have prepared our three children & others for GCSE Polish by home tutoring. In my primary school work in the Watford area I have developed a liking for Mathematics, where I successfully tutored our children for the Watford secondary school entrance exams. I have a mixed circle of friends, these being English, Polish (born in Poland & in the UK) & others. With my Polish background, I naturally have an interest in Polish matters which I am happy to share with others. I worked in England initially in the late 1980s, and returned to live permanently in 1991. Over the years I have enjoyed learning the English language, though it was difficult at first. This has allowed me to develop an interest in English culture & heritage, which includes walking in the country and enjoying watching sports such as rugby!
Teaching Experience:
After qualifying with a degree in Education Studies in Poland, I worked in Gniezno as an educator ("wychowawca") (1985-1991). After moving to the UK, I returned to work in education when our children became older:
2000-2003:
Nursery teaching assistant, Elstree, Herts.
2001-2004:
Class Teacher at Polish Community School - Ealing, London. Teaching children of Polish origin aged 8-13 years on Saturday mornings.
2005-2006:
Supply teaching to local primary schools in Watford area.
September 2006 - July 2007 (one year contract):
Full-time Learning Support Assistant (Year 7) at St Helen's School, Northwood, Middx.
September - December 2007 (one-term contract):
Full-time extended Behaviour Support role at Primary Support Base in Berrygrove School, Watford, included interpreting for families of Polish origin.
April 2008 - current:
Part-time Teaching Assistant in Special Needs at St John's CE Primary School, Stanmore.
Tutoring Approach:
My first task is to identify the individual needs of the pupil. I then plan the lessons where I set clear and realistic goals. This is the approach I take for primary school Mathematics and also for GCSE Polish tuition. For both I refer to the current UK curriculum with relevant Key Stage Mathematics and recent Polish GCSE papers. For Polish GCSE tuition, I carefully select appropriate Polish-origin teaching materials because teaching Polish in the UK has its specifics. Here I can understand that Polish teenagers born in the UK may not always be motivated to learn Polish, so I strive to make the activities enjoyable and varied as well as demanding! I set homework in Mathematics & Polish which I then receive back by email, and I check this in my time before the next lesson. For adult tuition in Polish, I would first discuss and agree an appropriate programme of work with my client that matches their interests.
