Kit - Cambridge tutor
Information About Kit:
Personal Description:
Hi! My name is Kit. I'm a philosopher now moving into teaching. I'm profoundly enthusiastic about my subjects and passionate about teaching. Forced to pick out three of my qualities, they might be: the ability to listen and thoughtfully respond, diligence and dedication.
I've been fortunate enough to have a great education at Cambridge University, where I achieved the highest marks in my year (a 1st). Although my background is primarily Philosophy, I've also studied History at postgraduate and undergraduate level, and Experimental Psychology at undergraduate level. In addition, I can in tutor primary school students in English & Mathematics etc, and also help prepare for examinations including the 11+. I also speak passable Hindi. I'm now preparing for further study and hope to spend my life teaching.
I have recently been accepted by a reputed tuition company which interviews and vets their tutors, please contact for details. (They currently have insufficient work)
I have recently married a lovely lady and we live together in Cambridge.
Teaching Experience:
I have provided informal tuition of several undergraduate students at Cambridge University. This raised their marks: in one case from a predicted 3rd to a high 2:1.
As yet I have little experience of more formal tuition. This is the reason for my low prices.
Tutoring Approach:
Enthusiasm is vital to the success of any tuition. But you will also want a tutor who knows the topic inside out. This is necessary not to answer any difficult questions with accuracy and lucidity. Not only that, only someone with a firm grasp of a subject will be able to freely adapt the approach, the concepts and presentation of facts, to best suit the student. I believe that I have both qualities.
Below, I very briefly outline my general approach to providing tuition and some of the more practical 'nut & bolts' issues below. Please feel free to contact me for more details.
General Approach:
Throughout, three truths will be constantly kept in mind:
First, an interested student is a successful student. Learning can and should be a great pleasure at any age, although bad experiences or lack of confidence in the classroom can take away the joy. I will generate a supportive environment where the tutee feels comfortable to ask questions (even so-called silly ones). Difficult and abstract concepts will be translated into concrete examples relevant to the student and perhaps current affairs. My enthusiasm for these subjects will, I hope, be contagious.
Second, that students of all levels should be learning how to think (analyse, asses etc..) for themselves whilst learning or revising the subject itself . This, especially for GCSE and above, inevitably translates into good exam results. Whenever possible and appropriate tuition sessions will be focused on developing and clarifying the student's own ideas, providing them with the knowledge and ability to do so.
Finally, many students have insufficient confidence in their abilities. I want my students to feel confident that they are in control of their learning. Encouragement will be provided wherever appropriate, picking out the good in all the tutee's ideas. They will work hard, but at the end will have earned the right to feel extremely confident in their subject and in their academic work in general.
Nuts & Bolts:
Although I will be thoroughly acquainted and competent on the course curriculum and syllabus, tutoring will be tailored to the individual and flexible. A detailed programme will be worked out with the student, with input from parents as required.
Before agreeing to undertake any tuition, I would be much obliged if whoever is paying for the tuition, and/or a guardian if the tutee is under 18, would contact me. I am happy to do this by phone, or may be able to drop by for a meet & greet in person .
A course of tuition will start with a short chat to establish: what level the student is currently at; where they feel most confident and where the greatest challenges lie; which approaches are likely to fit their personality and desired learning style; what specific goals there are (if any); and what the would like to achieve through the tuition sessions.
