Information About Matthew:

Personal Description:

I'm currently a doctoral researcher (French Literature) at Cardiff University and have a BA (Hons.) in French and MPhil. in French Literature. I have spent substantial time teaching in France as well as currently teaching at Cardiff University where I teach courses on translation, grammar and literature. My areas of expertise are: French-English / English - French translation, French Grammar, French Oral and Aural skills. Aside from language work, I am also a specialist in 20th French Literature (Marcel Proust, Jean Cocteau, Jean Genet), Culture and Society and can tutor those studying for a Business French Diploma. I have tutored students that are preparing for GCSEs, AS and A levels in the past as well as those preparing to sit the DELF and DALF professional qualifications.

Teaching Experience:

My teaching experience is varied and intense which has resulted in me adopting varying methods of teaching depending on the student's need. I have taught professionally abroad and have been an assistant d'anglais at a French University (2007) as well as a lecteur in an adult education centre in Normandy (2009). I also taught for a year in a French Primary School (2010) and am well-versed in effective and efficient techniques of language learning. I am currently an Associate Lecturer at Cardiff University where I teach on the BA French degree scheme and teach language, grammar, translation skills and French Literature.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that learning should be fun, interesting and conducive. I have the advantage of having taught in France, and have received support, training and advice from The British Council. Consequently, I have a wealth of resources to facilitate the teaching and learning of French. I believe that individual students have individual styles and ways of learning and consequently, I am flexible in my approach to teaching French (depending on the needs of the pupil). Normally, I would like to meet with prospective students to gauge your ability in French and discover what it is you hope to achieve from tuition; a provisional meeting which I would charge half rate for. When I teach French I make it not only fun and interesting but also relevant to the demands of the pupil. I am passionate about French and France and always make lessons engaging, effective, relevant and enjoyable. Through enjoyment, comes knowledge and with knowledge comes results.
