Information About Deirdre:

Personal Description:

I have recently returned home to Northern Ireland after completing my PGCE and 6 years teaching experience in Newcastle Upon Tyne. In my career to date I have worked as classroom teacher as well as Head of Spanish. I have had specific responsibility for teaching Spanish and French to GCSE level and Spanish to A-level. In recent years I have had 93% A*-C success at GCSE level and 100% A*-C at A-level.

I hold a joint BA Hons degree in French and Spanish from Trinity College Dublin, which I achieved in 2009. During my time at Trinity I spent a year "off-books" in order to teach English as a Foreign Language Assistant in France and I spent 3 months studying in Spain. These experiences allowed me to immerse myself in the cultures and improve my fluency in each language.
I love languages and have always had a passion for learning languages and teaching.

Teaching Experience:

Park View School, August 2012 - August 2016: Teacher of French & Spanish, Head of Spanish
All Saints College, January 2011 - August 2012: Subject Leader of Spanish
Queen Elizabeth High School, September 2010 - January 2011: Teacher of French to A-level and Spanish

I am trained to teach both French and Spanish to A-level, however in recent years I have gained more experience teaching A-level Spanish. I have taught Spanish at both AS and A2 level, with specific responsibilities for teaching grammar, topic work, speaking skills, essay writing skills, and the regional topic for which I developed and completed three successful Spanish Exchanges with a school in Ciudad Real, Castilla-La Mancha. To date I have 100% A*-C success rate at AS and A2 level.
I have also taught French and Spanish to GCSE level and I have carried out numerous speaking exams. I work hard to ensure that my pupils are fully prepared and confident before sitting a speaking exam.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe I am a friendly, approachable individual and I have been commended for my positive rapport and warm relationship with my pupils. I thoroughly enjoy teaching, however I feel that one-to-one tutoring provides the opportunity to concentrate wholly on possible weaknesses and work together to overcome and master the language.
