Stuart - Nottingham tutor

Information About Stuart:

Personal Description:

I am a First year student of History at the University of Nottingham. However, I spent the last academic year as a student of paediatric Nursing.
I left the course for History, as I decided I could not spend what I thought was an appropriate amount of time with my patients. Also, during the summer term I found myself helping my friends revise for their history exams, as I could remember things from A-level that they had not been taught. In fact since my GCSE's I have always enjoyed helping my friends revise, and found that this only serves to build on my own knowledge.
Throughout the course last year I experienced teaching first hand as an assistant in a Nursery and After-School club for 3 weeks, and whilst on a ward placement assisted one of the older patients with continuing their work. As a child I attended many different schools (we moved house a lot) and have met many amazing (and not so amazing) teachers, and from these I have built a picture of how to teach effectively. My position as an assistant in a primary school has helped me do this as well.

Teaching Experience:

I have had experience teaching in a primary school setting for two weeks, and experience teaching both nursery and primary school age pupils for three weeks. Whilst on a ward, I assisted a patient with their studies (for their GCSE's) for six weeks.
I have learnt through experience the best ways in which I and many of my friends learn, and have learnt the importance in discovering the best way in which you work and learn.

Tutoring Approach:

In teaching I have found that the best and sometimes only way to help is to find the way in which the tutee learns, and especial how they "see" the problem. During my time at school, I often found teachers would just repeat what they had just said when I said that I didn't understand- and of course that didn't help.
For revision I have always found that it is best to work from a solid knowledge base, and to build confidence in the tutee using various techniques (for example: testing or even role playing). Years of revising myself and helping my friends to do so has taught me that everyone revises in a radically different manner, I use large posters and mindmaps (for example) and one of my friends finds talking to himself whilst pacing a circle helps him. This has also taught me the importance of not forcing someone to adapt to a different style of revision if they believe that their system works.
