Information About Marc:

Personal Description:

I am a fully qualified school teacher with 9 years teaching experience. I am based near Amesbury which is 8 miles from Salisbury. In my spare time I like to watch and play sport, play guitar and spend time with my wife travelling both home and abroad.

I have been described by a former student as friendly and understanding. I like to work with both the student and parents/guardians and keep everyone in the loop. I find the most important part of planning with the student and working on existing studies as well as previous materials. I use a variety of materials and techniques to help students learn these include flashcards, number lines, videos, games, pictures, sorting exercises and old fashioned Q&A. I like to start off by making the learning visual and focus upon exisiting the student has as well as new skills the student needs to learn to combat the topic together with the development of knowledge/practice.

I prefer tutoring in the students home environment as it tends to make learning alot more constructive and less daunting for the student.

Teaching Experience:

After 9 years teaching I currently find myself working in a Hampshire school near Andover, where I teach a multitude of subjects including History, Geography, Business Studies and Religious Studies. At my previous schools I also taught English and Maths up to KS3.

I have experience in dealing with students Key Stage 2 (specifically English, Maths and 11+ exams), KS3 and KS4 (specialising in my teaching subjects) as well as A Levels (History and Media) and Adult education. Being an exam marker for GCSE and AS Level has also helped me understand the mind of the marker.

Over the past 7 years I have tutored many students ranging from KS2 (Year 4 English and Maths, 11+ preparation), KS3, GCSE and BTEC's and A Level. All have made personal progress that has assisted with their school performance whilst other students it has opened the doors to their first choice schools, colleges and universities. Some students I have tutored for a month, others have been for the lead up to exams (4-12 weeks) whilst 2 tutees I worked with for 18 months (one was a Year 6 boy who struggled with English and Maths and struggled when he moved into his new secondary school, whilst the other was a Sixth Former who was aiming to gain a place at a top university. After a lot of hardwork on her part she gained 2 A's and B grade and is currently in her final year studying International Politics.

I am willing to tutor more than one subject if the student needs such help and have even tutored small groups of students (3-4 maximum) which can help with learning and also breaks down the cost a little.

Tutoring Approach:

One size doesn't fit all and as someone who himself only discovered he was dyslexic midway through his degree course at the age of 23 I know only too well different approaches may well need to be taken before obstacles can be overcome.

To me it doesn't matter if you are 8 or 18 every subject or exam can feel like the Grand National, terrifying and very difficult. However many students seem to get around and to those students who struggle this often is puzzling and annoying, especially if they are falling at the first hurdles, so my job is to help them get cleanly around the course and be a success recognising techniques to overcoming those big hurdles that up to now have been preventing them from making anymore progress.

Willingness and a belief of future success from the student and throughtfullness on my part is needed.

I am approachable, patient and resourceful tutor who creates a personalised programme of tutoring for each student. I treat each student as an individual and as such build a friendly respectful rapport with them.

Parents/Guardians are given a programme of the subject/topics covered once an initial meeting has been conducted. Homework or revision tests are submitted from time to time, homeworks or long term studies from school/college can be introduced or looked at during the sessions if it is agreed.
