Information About Marilyn:

Personal Description:

I am a young and enthusiastic Oxford Graduate, looking to pass on my love of learning; a passion for the English language and its literature; and my knowledge of civilization's great thinkers from Augustine to Zoroaster. In other words, tutoring English (with students from Primary through GCSE) and Philosophy and Theology (to University level), University preparation and general research reading and writing skills (including essay skills) to students of all ages and abilities. I live in South London, I'm happy to have students visit me at home, or to travel to you, including Central and West London.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught a number of students, and I'm happy to provide references and testimonials. I teach both one to one, or if you arrange it, a small group (perhaps 3 friends) in which case the rate is negotiable.

Tutoring Approach:

On our first meeting, I like to work out what you hope to achieve from having a tutor, whether broad or specific: "an improvement in reading, spelling and comprehension", "working on Romeo and Juliet" or "improved exam technique". The advantage of having a tutor on a one to one basis or in a small group is that I can tailor the material to your specific needs. We can go at your pace and quickly improve your level of understanding in a way that just can't be done in a classroom. As we go on we can reassess these aims, and add new ones, too. I aim to help my students to understand a subject for themselves, as opposed to spoon-feeding information that may come out undigested! Learning to understand (and maybe even love) your subject is the key to success.
