Emma - Exeter tutor

Information About Emma:

Personal Description:

I am a graduate Southampton University where I studied German up to 4th year undergraduate level as part of my Music degree, and I also spent some time at Exeter University doing postgraduate study in German literature. Since 1998 I have spent extended periods of time in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, including working as an au pair for a family with small children. I now do freelance tutoring in violin and German, and I work within the Deaf education sector.

Teaching Experience:

I have several years' experience with learners of various ages, needs and learning styles, from GCSE students to adults, individually or in groups. I have learned several languages through a variety of formats, and so experienced some of the different ways in which languages can be learned, and I have also made a study of the theory of language aquisition.

Tutoring Approach:

I try to adapt to the tutee's individual needs and wishes, working on what s/he feels would be most helpful and involving him/her in planning how and what to learn. I like the flexibility of one-to-one tuition, especially as this enables me to work at the pace of the tutee, concentrating on more difficult areas or simply reducing pressure to build up confidence. Above all, I aim to create a relaxed atmosphere in which the tutee feels happy about trying new things without fear of making mistakes.
