Barry - New Cross tutor
Information About Barry:
Personal Description:
I'm currently training for a PGCE, with the aim of becoming a GCSE and A-level Science (Biology) Teacher. I'm a passionate and enthusiastic person with a strong enjoyment of science. My particular passions lie in microbiology and immunology, although I also enjoy physics. Biology has always fascinated me, and I am committed and dedicated to learn more about the current field of research. I am a very sociable person and enjoy making new friends and communicating to a wide range of people. In my spare time I practice thai-boxing, and often take classes.
Teaching Experience:
I have participated in my university study help scheme, and have helped two students achieve excellent grades in their first year modules. I have just completed my degree, however what I lack in experience I make up for in knowledge, passion, awareness and commitment, and I feel that my age is a positive factor in enabling me to associate better with those studying at lower key stages such as GCSE. I think that my enjoyment for the subject is the most important thing, since others will only want to learn if they can see that it is an enjoyable and rewarding subject.
I have also taught classes in thai-boxing as mentioned above, as I often help my trainer out and am training for an official qualification. Teaching thai-boxing is immensely difficult as it requires clear explanation, adapting to various types of people and communicating with them as individuals.
Tutoring Approach:
My priority is to approach the student in the way that works best for them, whether it is audio, visual or kinetic. I find that everyone is taught differently, and the requirements for each student is different. Thus I put emphasis on helping the student identify their weaknesses first, and then build on it. I also instill confidence by showing a student their strengths clearly, and giving them a positive goal to work forward to. Whether it's a potential future career, or simply adding relevence of the subject to their life, I find that it is important to find an approach that works before diving in.
I would work relatively informally with the student at first, honing in on the key points of the syllabus to tackle. Once this is done, I would then bring material to work through, relevent to the particular study topic. As well as this, I would provide help with essays, coursework or other components, and would encourage the student to email me if they have any urgent questions between tutorial sessions. Above all, I will ensure that I give the student 100% of my effort, and only request that they do the same.
