Kirsten - Edinburgh tutor

Information About Kirsten:

Personal Description:

I am 20 years old and currently in my third year of BSc Zoology at the University of Edinburgh. At school I was a straight A student, achieving 5 A's in my Highers, of which my favourite subject was Biology. I then continued to study Biology at an Advanced Higher level, achieving a final grade of B. At University I have achieved consistently high marks and am currently aiming for a 2:1 grade at the end of my Junior Honours year.

I am an enthusiastic, reliable person who would bring a great deal of enthusiasm into the job. Although I would expect each tutoring session to be thorough and require good concentration I would conduct it in a warm, casual manner where the tutee would feel relaxed enough to, hopefully, enjoy what I am teaching them and would feel free to ask any questions where they feel necessary.

I look forward to hearing from anyone who feels that they would like a little extra help to achieve their grades to the best of their abilities.

I am available for tutoring from now until the end of March.

Teaching Experience:

So far my tutoring experience has been limited to helping my younger sibling through her Standard Grade biology course. This is a subject which she has greatly struggled with and class tests reflected a basic lack of understanding of Biology in general.
In the run up to her mock exams before Christmas I tutored her in the subject areas that she most struggled with and monitored her past paper results to identify areas in which she needed more help.

Through her own hard work and my extra help she achieved an overall 2 for her mock exam - a huge improvement from her previous low general and fail marks. With her real exams fast approaching I am continuing to tutor her in order to help her maintain such a good grade and even improve on it.

I have also been asked to help several of her friends who have struggles with the subject and it is my goal to assist them in achieving credit grades in their Standard Grades.

Although this is my first real tutoring work I have a wide range of experience with children and young adults both through babysitting and my involvement with the Girl Guiding movement where I was a young leader for both Brownie and Guide groups for a period of roughly 2 years. Such experience has prepared me for work with people of varying ages which I feel is hugely advantageous for a tutor.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a great enthusiasm for biology and I would approach tutoring with the same sense of enjoyment I gain from my own studies. I aim to make Biology, not a subject to be dreaded, but one which offers an exciting insight into the world around us.

While I expect my tutees to be hard working I would want the teaching environment to be informal as I am a firm believer in the fact that it is far easier to learn in a relaxed environment rather than piling on the pressure.

Additional work would be set if deemed necessary, likely to be in the form of past papers which I would mark in my own time.

I want to make Biology a subject which each tutee will appreciate and hopefully even learn to enjoy as much as I do.
