Information About Harriet:
Personal Description:
I am a Final Year Medical Student at the University of Birmingham. I have a wide range of interests outside of my studies including playing the violin, exercising regularly, and making time to socialise! I am enthusiastic, organised, friendly and very approachable!
Over time I have discovered ways to learn effectively and am keen to pass on my skills. I studied Biology, Chemistry and Psychology at A-level, and also English Language until AS-level. These subjects are all applicable to Medicine, and as my studying continues I have developed my interest in science, human behaviour and communication studies.
Teaching Experience:
When I was 18 I had a year out before University. During this year, I spent 3 months at a school in Uganda, Africa. I taught music, sports, english, science and maths. Although the teaching style was very different it gave me an insight into how to tailor teaching to the student in order to get the most effective learning experience.
During my Medical degree, I have had to do regular presentations in front of both my piers and seniors - this has given me confidence in my teaching abilities, and I'm sure on a one-to-one basis I could be a good teacher.
Tutoring Approach:
In my degree it is essential that my communication skills are excellent. I am sure I would be able to form a rapport with any student; and believe that this is the key factor in creating a learning environment.
Working together to understand what the students worries are, and then explaining what I can do to help will be the big picture. From there, I will be able to create lesson plans appropriate for the student, and ensure that they know what the goals and learning outcomes are for each session.
