Information About Peter:

Personal Description:

I am 25 years old and am currently studying for a graduate medical degree at Hughes Hall, University of Cambridge. During the application process for this course I was required to sit the UKCAT aptitude test, where I achieved a very strong score (Section One: 730, Section Two: 860, Section Three: 790, Section Four: 730). I have recently left the Army as a Captain, having served for 4 years, including an operational tour of Afghanistan and various training exercises abroad in Belize, Brunei and Kenya. Most recently I was employed as a platoon commander at the Army Foundation College, Harrogate where I was responsible for training and teaching a platoon of 48 sixteen to eighteen year olds over the course of a year.

Before I attended the commissioning course at Sandhurst, I achieved a 2.i in politics, philosophy and economics from St Edmund Hall, University of Oxford. My focus during this degree was towards politics and economics, with a particular emphasis on British political and economic developments from 1900 right up to contemporary life.

I attended a state comprehensive school in West Sussex before I went up to university, where I took both my A-levels and GCSE's. During Sixth Form I took four subjects to A-level (Math's, Further Math's, Chemistry and History) and two subjects to AS-level (Physics and Economics), achieving an A Grade in all subjects. At GCSE I achieved five A*'s (Including Math's and Double Science) and six A's as well as an A in an additional math's qualification (FSMQ).

Outside of my studies I am a keen rugby player and have represented school, college and my battalion; I currently play regularly for Bury St Edmund's Wolves. I also enjoy trekking, picked up whilst achieving my Duke of Edinburgh's Gold Award at school, which has led me on several expeditions, including traversing the entire length of the Spanish Pyrenees.

Teaching Experience:

As discussed above, my last job in the military was working at the Army Foundation College, Harrogate; a post I held for over eighteen months. During this time my responsibility was the teaching, training and welfare of a large platoon of sixteen to eighteen year olds. This included lessons on basic military skills going right through to looking at the Law of Armed Conflict and the contemporary political context of military deployments as well as offering assistance with their educational work in literacy, numeracy and IT. During this time I gained my Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector which is a formal qualification that covers various aspects of teaching theory and practice.

This teaching was delivered to groups ranging in size from over 200 people in a lecture theatre down to a one-on-one session in a classroom. There was a wide range of ability groups within my platoon, which has given me a good experience in how to tailor teaching towards an individual's aptitude and how to keep different people motivated. Overall my experiences at the College have given me a solid foundation from which to build on with my academic achievements and will allow me to offer high quality tutorials that engage and stimulate students as well as improve their prospects with regards to exams.

Alongside tutoring for exams and specific subjects I also offer sessions on all aspects of UCAS applications. Having been successful through the application process twice (to both Oxford and Cambridge Universities) I have a thorough understanding of what is required to make your application stand out and how to shine at interview. I can offer advice to both prospective arts students as well as science students, with a particular emphasis on Oxbridge applicants - including the separate application forms, interview techniques and aptitude tests required.

Tutoring Approach:

My overall approach is to start out with an open and honest discussion of where the student wants to get to and a frank assessment of where they currently are, before moving onto drawing up a realistic plan and agreeing on our respective roles and responsibilities to achieve it.

I use a coaching and mentoring attitude to teaching, whereby the student is given control of their own learning and I am there to facilitate that. I work from the belief that if the student does not take ownership of their own performance then their achievements will be a lot lower than their full potential.
