Ben - Brockley tutor
Information About Ben:
Personal Description:
I recently graduated from the University of Bristol with a BA (Hons) in Philosophy, and am currently working towards an MA in Film and Television studies at Warwick University. I am passionate about Philosophy, Film and English. I am a reliable, flexible and friendly individual. As well as working hard to ensure a tutee understands the content of a subject, I also
Teaching Experience:
I have tutored in Philosophy for just under a year, and I have given seminars in social media, filming, editing and audio recording. I was also a young leader for just under a year at my local Beaver Scouts group, working with boys aged between six and eight years old. I also have baby sat for a number years, during which I have help children between the ages of six and fourteen with their homework. My time spent studying at University has also given me the experience necessary to teach tutees about essay and exam techniques.
Tutoring Approach:
I have studied Philosophy for over seven years and am extremely passionate about the subject. Through my extensive studying, I know that the subject is not always immediately accesible and can often appear somewhat overwhelming. This is why I take the time to get to know a tutee and take care to find the style of learning which is most effective for them, as well as translating Philosophical jargon into plain english. I am particularly adept at finding ways of making Philosophy relevant to a tutee- this can often be achieved by considering music, film and books although it is a pre-requisite of my teaching style that we look closely at the relevant texts. I think that learning is at its most effective in a relaxed environment; and as such, I insist that during my first session with a tutee we talk informally about their curriculum and what they would like to achieve as well as their general interests and hobbies. After this initial meeting I can begin to create a more rigorous lesson plan for subsequent sessions. As such, I offer reduced rates for the first two sessions with a tutee. Where appropriate, I set assignments in between each session, although I understand that this is not always desirable on top of a heavy homework load. As such, I only offer this as an option and do not insist upon it.
I studied English Literature at GCSE and A Level. I received an A* and A respectively (at the time I took my A Levels, A*s were not awarded). I am more than competent in my ability to teach prose and poetry thanks to my high grades achieved in the subject. My A* in GCSE Drama and my current studies as a Masters student in Film and Television Studies, also mean that I can teach any theatrical or film texts encountered when studying English and Drama. I can also tutor in the performance side of Drama due to my GCSE as well as having made numerous shirt films. My teaching style in English and Drama is the same as described above for Philosophy.
