Information About Saskia:

Personal Description:

I recently graduated from Drama Centre London, top of my year, with an MA in European and Classical Acting (which incorporated a real focus on Chekhov and Shakespeare). Although in essence a practical course, it gave me a wealth of experience in 'unlocking' classical language and style, interrogating character and thematic devices. This built on my BA degree in Theatre, Performance Studies and Literature from Warwick University where I graduated with a 1st.

I specialise in deconstructing all forms of literature and thrive in finding ways to get my students to actively engage with the text. I have taken part and personally facilitated workshops on Shakespeare at spaces including: The Globe, universities in Japan, Stratford Circus and Warwick University, and this has given me a wealth of experience and tools to access classical text. I am incredibly passionate about making text accessible and figuring out what works for the individual student.

I have been an experienced tutor of Drama and English literature since my time studying at Warwick University, and more recently worked in Russia tutoring a 12-year-old girl for Public School Entrance Exams in England (which she successfully gained entry for). I also run workshops and one-to-one session on audition, technique for students preparing for drama school auditions.

I first started leading workshops for children through the Warwick Arts Centre Youth Theatre, where I became a Youth Theatre Leader for the 14-16 year-old age group. For a year, I led workshops for three hours every Saturday morning in which we explored different types of storytelling, movement, and music culminating in a show we co-wrote at the end of the year. I also directed for Warwick Arts Centre 'Play in a Day', which is all in the title really! I had a large group of 4-8 year-olds and we had the day to devise a play to perform to parents in the evening: a tiring but exhilarating day! I have since gone on to lead workshops using theatre in prisons, youth groups in London and in Quito, Ecuador. This September I was so excited to return to facilitating workshops in 'Circus Skills' at Stratford Circus.

Tutoring Approach:

I have worked with students across all ages and this has made me comfortable in adapting my approach to each student's specific requirements. Unlocking text to make it accessible and exciting is of upmost importance to the way I work especially when it comes to classical text. Feeling removed or finding themes irrelevant to modern life are challenges that I often face with students, and I am passionate about removing these blocks. I also believe that an appreciation of literature, both classical and contemporary, is important and makes a difference to performance across the board: encouraging a critical approach improves analytical skills important for all subject areas, and helps in writing well-balanced, well-structured essays.

My training as an actress enables me to provide an innovative and stimulating approach to the individual student. I work hard to encourage confidence in each session, as this not only improves engagement with the subject but also helps develop a strong individual writing style. I tend to figure out what approach works best for each student over the first few sessions and structure lessons accordingly so as to maximise learning and overall enjoyment of the subject.

I am a high achiever and extremely conscientious with regards to all elements of my work. It this attention to detail and a strong work ethic I intend to impart to students, be it in structuring revision plans, planning essays or analysing text. The importance of proficiently organising work not only improves success but dramatically decreases stress levels, which is something I have found to be the biggest block for student preparing for difficult exams and auditions or school entrance exams.
