Information About Ruth:

Personal Description:

I am Ruth, a 33 year old Philosophy and RS teacher at an FE college.

I have excellent communication skills, a caring and yet thorough approach to teaching and the logical ability to turn the abstract or seemingly obscure into something simple and digestible. I am adaptable and always tailor my tutoring style to the needs and preferences of the individual learner.

I have a first class honours degree in Philosophy from the University of Southampton and have experience teaching literacy skills to children and adults; including those with learning disabilities.

My interests lie in the arts including reading philosophy and attending public philosophy talks at universities, visiting art exhibitions, art history, theatre novels and music.

My vocational background is connected with supporting children and young adults on the autistic spectrum and who have learning disabilities. I was a Regional Training Manager for a large domiciliary care company and I trained carers in the following areas:

Tutoring Approach:

I value education highly and would love the knowledge I have acquired, and continue to acquire, to be put to good use and, in the words of Alan Bennet, 'passed on'.

My tutoring style is relaxed and natural, positive and focussed. I believe in supporting individuals to develop independent learning skills and self-confidence in order to achieve their goals to the best of their abilities. My personal aim is to foster enthusiasm for subjects I genuinely love and believe to be important in life.

The key, in my opinion, to educational progression is to focus on building confidence and encouraging independent thinking as well as equipping individuals with critical and evaluative skills.

I intend to help make learning as enjoyable and manageable as possible. Every individual is different and therefore learns through different means, at different paces. For this reason I endeavour to get to know individual students in order to develop enjoyable individual learning programmes.
