Information About John:
Personal Description:
I spent 25 years as a London based professional commercial photographer working for global advertising and design agencies. I produced international campaigns for MacDonalds, Haagen Dazs, Neff and Craft Foods as well as shooting magazine features for Food and Travel, Elle and House & Garden magazines. I established my own art practice and began teaching in 2010. I have taught A Level and Foundational level Art and Photography in prestigious private and international schools in the UK for 12 years and achieve excellent results with my students. I regularly run workshops for adults and have been working with charities in Oxford for the last 5 years. I run a charity which opened in 2019, teaching analogue black & white photography from beginner to expert level.
During my career I have maintained a passion for developing my skill and creativity through my own personal creative work. I am never afraid to make mistakes or try new ideas or techniques. I have maintained my own professional development, attending workshops and collaborating with specialists in the photography worldwide. Recently I have trained with Michael Schaaf learning the Wet Plate Collodion process and Andres Pardo learning to research and develop plant based photographic developers as part of a sustainable photography project. My personal art practice takes a research based approach maintaining my academic interest in both photographic process and history.
I graduated in 2016 with a Post Graduate Diploma in Education and in 2019 with a Master of Fine Art in Fine Art. As a practicing artist I have exhibited internationally and won awards. My work is held in private art collections worldwide and I am currently Artist in Residence at University of Derby School of Art Photography Dept. As well as teaching in school, I have lectured at London College of Communication, The Photographers Gallery and Reading University.
Teaching Experience:
Before I began teaching formally I was involved in the Leonardo da Vinci European Placement Programme where I was able to offer internships to 3 students from Sweden, Poland and Greece who worked with me for 6 months each in my London studio. I made critical assessment reports of their progress, involved them in the day-to-day operation of a commercial studio and in the case of one student, supported him in developing a portfolio, which won them a place on Gothenburg University's School of Photography degree course.
Since 2010 I have taught A Level Photography (OCR & AQA Board) and Foundation Art & Design in high attainment private schools working with both British and International students. I am a highly experienced specialist photography teacher able to coach students to a high grade and my students regularly achieve A and A* results. Bringing together my years of high level commercial expertise and my personal passion for creativity I am able to support students to engage with a wide range of photographic approaches; fine art, documentary, portraiture, landscape, commercial, digital, analogue, alternative experimental, all of these areas of photography are within my skill set. I am experienced with industry standard digital editing software, Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop, Premier Pro etc as well as black & white and colour film processing and printing along with a range of alternative processes such as cyanotype, chemigram, phytogram, lumen and solography among many.
Tutoring Approach:
My teaching approach is as a coach/facilitator and mentor providing my students with the confidence to develop their own ideas within a supportive guided structure. I can implement a curriculum differentiated to each students needs meeting the exam requirements while encompassing the students specific range of interests. My teaching is student centred and adaptive; each student is given the space to explore ideas that connect with their own experience and interest which is key to maintaining motivation. My learning strategies are co-created with my student to account for individual learning needs. Some students need lots of clear boundaries and structures while others need the freedom to move around, both conceptually and literally. A lesson conducted while walking around can be just as effective as one sat at a desk if it meets the needs of the student. Ultimately, my objective is to encourage students to develop a passion for photography that will stay with them for the rest of their lives.
