Andrew - Leeds tutor
Information About Andrew:
Personal Description:
I am an engineer by heart, with A-level and degree-level backgrounds in Electronics, Physics and Mathematics. I am 26 and currently finishing my Ph.D into Microwave Electronic Engineering at the University of Leeds. My Ph.D relies on a solid grasp of these three subjects. I have presented my work at conferences amongst my peers, this requires a confident attitude to talking about the subject at hand and to be pitched at the appropriate level. I have work experience in the electronics industry to give substance to what I teach, with up-to-date examples of how these topics are applied and how they can be seen in our daily lives.
Teaching Experience:
I have had 3 years experience of teaching the undergraduates at the University of Leeds, in total I have taught six separate year groups and assisted in labs and practical exercises.
So far I have tutored two people on a one-to-one setting; one at GCSE level for Mathematics and English, the other at first-year degree level for the majority of his modules.
So far I have a 100% pass rate - each module/subject I have tutored has been passed by the student first time.
Tutoring Approach:
I believe that understanding a subject, instead of memorising facts and figures, is the true way to go forward in any area of learning.
In my experience I have found that each student has their own unique view and attitudes towards each of their subjects, so it is essential that a personalised approach to help them understand the subject is needed.
Once the student understand the framework of the subject at hand, adding knowledge to this subject becomes easier and more enjoyable to them than it originally appeared to be. I show the student how their subject consists of a constant theme with different elements to it, instead of the usual method of teaching what appears to be many arbitrary facts and/or formulae under the umbrella of the subject.
I believe that my tutoring style comes from remembering the way that I originally came to understand the problem at hand myself. I aim to not judge the student, but to encourage them to have an open discussion about the problem at hand with me. From these discussions I can understand how they grasp the topic and can help guide this to a fuller understanding.
I try to use many examples from different areas and often play on the similarities between the more abstract concepts of the learning material with areas which the student has an active interest in to give them a more familiar understanding to a subject.
