Information About Ellie:

Personal Description:

I am a recent Cambridge graduate - I studied Land Economy (an interesting mix of economics, law, geography and finance).

Teaching Experience:

I started young, helping other primary school students with exam preparation. I turned my efforts to more lucrative ends in secondary school where among I sold revision notes to fellow students.

An example: we were unfortunate in our GCSE history teaching where we were subjected to 5 teachers over 5 terms. Students insisted I was responsible for their eventual success in the exams, whether they used my compact revision guides, or attended the workshops in which we utilised dramatisations, poetry and song among other methods to drill home the facts.

My favourite success story is very close to home, as I helped my younger sister with her Maths. From always being in the lower sets at school, and frankly hating the subject, I found ways to explain concepts to her that teachers at school hadn't had time to convey, resulting in her eventually achieving an A at GCSE (rather frustratingly only 1 mark off an A*).

I was also the first port of call when it came to advice on personal statements for university applications. I continue to be called upon for advice on job applications (even those completely unrelated to my subject - such as my friend's successful application to do a PhD at Cancer Research UK). So university application advice is another speciality of mine. I can give particular insight into Oxbridge applications.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a very flexible approach when it comes to teaching - it really depends on the student at hand. There are numerous ways to explain concepts in Maths, Chemistry and Physics, it is simply a matter of finding the one which clicks. Having helped a great variety of students through their GCSE's and A levels I know that different people's minds work in different ways, and sometimes there simply isn't enough time in a busy classroom to make sure everyone understands everything. I know I can find the explanations that teachers may have missed.

I have always done extremely well in exams, which I put down to having a decent grasp of the fundamentals, combined with good exam technique. I can help teach students the tricks to getting maximum marks in exams, whilst of course making sure they also understand the subject at hand so are comfortable with it.
