Nastassja - Glasgow tutor

Information About Nastassja:

Personal Description:

I am a recent graduate of the University of Glasgow, where I gained a 2:1 in MA Hons German and History of Art. I also have up to A-level proficiency in History and Psychology.
I would say I am first and foremost an experienced linguist who can help any student of German with speaking skills or reading, listening, and grammar. Secondly, I have studied History subjects at University level and am able to assist particularly with essay-writing style. This is also relevant for Psychology as the Higher/A-level exams are extremely demanding.
I can also help students who are entering or already attending UK schools and need assistance with their English - whether spoken or written. I have experience of teaching English to students who's mother tongue is not English. I would also be able to assist native English speakers with spelling and grammar.
I would also like to point out that although I have referred to school students a lot in my description, I am just as available to adult learners as to children/teenagers.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught as a Foreign Language Assistant of English in a Secondary School in Germany (2007-8) where I performed a range of duties including: teaching classes of 25+ students, smaller groups of c.15 students, given extra lessons to groups of c.5 students, assisted the teacher with one-on-one help to students during English lessons, chaperoned on school trips, invigilated speaking exams, marked reading and writing exams. Students at the school ranged from 11-18 years old.
I have also assisted in classrooms at my own secondary school in Derbyshire, England, where I helped out with low ability German classes, in which some of the children found learning language very difficult and received special needs assistance within school. I would sit with an individual student during lessons and help them to persevere with and complete German language exercises. Although for those children who find school difficult in general, also find learning a language extremely difficult, it is however extremely beneficial for them to experience language lessons like any other child because they learn important skills even if they are not proficient in a foreign language when they leave school.
I do not have any formal teaching qualifications but can provide references for the above 2 positions I have had in teaching. I also have tutoring experience with adult learners.

Tutoring Approach:

My teaching style would generally be quite informal and would aim to support the student's school studies by helping them in whichever area they are finding difficult. The most important thing is that the student is comfortable with the assistance they are being given and find it beneficial, rather than feeling as though they are still at school.
As well as the use of teaching materials for practise etc. I would argue that being able to talk students through essay writing and language concepts can be greatly beneficial to their understanding and this is something which is often lacking at school where the teacher is unable to focus on individual students for a long period of time. Also, it is often true that it takes a different approach to help a student to understand something - I would endeavor to facilitate this and also to help them find an approach to essay planning and writing, and practise/revision, that suits them.
